And we have started the transition to more efficient use of power. Moving to LED bulbs in stead of incandescent is better than a 6:1 power savings.
Sort of like getting the lead out of gas (a really, really good thing) we just need to do it. But LED bulbs don't work for cooking cakes or brownies in an Easy Bake oven. Why do you hate kids so much? |

Update on the “pain of transition”:
Took delivery of a Model 3. 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. 350 miles of range. Charges a full tank overnight I’m my garage.
Costing me about 15 cents on the dollar vs gas for my last car.
“The pain - oh, the pain!” |

He's focused on 15 cents on the dollar and going 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. He ignores the cost of the car in factoring in the cost of ownership He ignores all the toxic pollution that was created to make it and the fossil fuels it takes to make the electricity to charge the batteries
Don't spoil his fun.

Another update on “the Pain”:
After a month or so the the math of charging at home vs gas is working out to be more like 20 cents on the dollar. But I still feel good looking forward to not having oil changes or tuneups.
Now get this; I order the car in march and took delivery 3 month later. Since I locking in the price when I ordered, the cost of the car has gone up $6,000. So driving it off the lot put money in my pocket. Because of availability I could easy get more than $8,000 over what I paid if I sold it today.
And the Tesla insurance is costing about $60 a month. Which is a surprise because Allstate was going for date rape when they gave me a quote.
Yeah, going green sux….. |

Really? Quote:"In 2021, about 4,116 billion kilowatthours (kWh) (or about 4.12 trillion kWh) of electricity were generated at utility-scale electricity generation facilities in the United States. About 61% of this electricity generation was from fossil fuels—coal, natural gas, petroleum, and other gases. About 19% was from nuclear energy, and about 20% was from renewable energy sources." https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=427&t=3

I haven't dug down into the specific kWh of charging a vehicle over time vs generation of that power. In spite of Ray being correct (sweet Jesus, take me now for that statement) in the generation breakdown across the country, it is likely there's less pollution to charge an EV long term than drive IC.
The other part of Z's point, I believe, is the extraction process of things such as lithium and cobalt is incredibly damaging environmentally. Major issue in the overall scheme of things? Maybe not, though a few South American villages are hating your azz right now. But it will be if countries and companies continue to push this direction without finding a better way to battery.
Finally, while you get to skip oil and tune ups, Tesla was rated 27th out of 28 companies in reliability last year. Woo hoo, they managed to beat out Lincoln! For your sake, I hope you went with the Model 3. Repair costs are heading your way and Repairpal says costs are 27% higher than the average vehicle. How did Toyota and Honda get big? Reliability. How did Tesla get big? Green hype. Between this and higher initial cost of the vehicle, I don't buy into the savings argument currently.

You're happy with your choice. Good for you, but I'm just not ready to climb on board quite yet As far as “ratings” go, take them with a grain of salt. Some firms actually rate German cars as reliable….good luck with that. And if you consider what can go wrong on an EV vs an ICE, well the odds are in my favor. But the real elephant in the room is the whole idea of change. Conservatives thought is that Change=Bad. Hell to some “Progressive” is some kind of insult. Think about that - the clowns here, type it on a computer that did not even exist when we were young, saying progress is bad. Meh, I've heard more than one story about having to replace a $25k battery bank out of pocket on a $50k-$90k vehicle. Probably less common than stubbing your toe, and more common than lightning striking you. It's enough to concern me and it's my money.
I'm also not saying change is bad. I'd rather drive than hook up the horses every time I need to go to town. I'm saying without forethought and proper planning, other problems can happen. Ask Contergan users how much their anxiety was reduced long term.
I've been in environmental analysis and mitigation in one form or another for nearly two decades. I've seen the wack a mole game repeated as the industry rushes from one gremlin to the next. There needs to be a more holistic approach to these issues. Do I know what that approach is? Nope. Do I think Li batteries are the miracle cure the world needs? Nope. |

Oddly the green aspect of EV’s was not what got me looking at them. Nor was the gas savings.
As a Mechanical Engineer I was attracted to the sweeping simplification and the many net benefits of the design approach.
And it’s not just Tesla. Have a look at the Ford Lightning. This thing is effing great.
I have had sports cars / sports sedans my whole life. Worked on most of them. Know all about them. The new EV’s really are the next level. |

Because I take issue with the knuckle dragged mentality that says change is bad.
People here push truly uniformed opinions about lowering pollution or implementing better technologies.
Just in automotive, GM, Ford and many others are rolling out some of the most advanced cares ever seen. Never mind all the benefits, some work against them because they are “progressive”. What kind of stupid it that anyway? |
