Yup. 1984.

Shopping for a crate 383 to turn it into a drag car.
10. Author: illinichaserDate: Mon, 7/30/2012, 7:50PM EST
My dream car is a '70 chevelle LS 6.

454 producing 450 hp and close to 500 ft-lb of torque.

a revolutionary car for the muscle generation.

For a dragster you can't go wrong with a set up like this.

no,,,

the 396 or 427 ,
much faster engines,

The 69 Z28 was THE revoutionary muscle car...

Not a fan of the z28. Don't know why, just not.

But, one things for sure, any of these bury a pony every day of the week and twice on sunday.

do you know the specs of the 69 Z28 with the 302 DZ ?

It is still one of the most powerful engines chevy ever produced...

383 is just a bored out 350. Even a 350 will be enough to force a transmission swap also!

427, go for the power

not disagreeing. Just not my choice in cars.

Maybe from my days of growing up around a bunch of rednecks all idolizing the camaro body.

No need to overbore a 350...

the bigger displacemnet does nothing but weaken the cylinder wall.

A steel crank shaft, 4 bolt mains make the motor durable..
And as we all should know it's the Heads that produce the HP...
202 valves, screw in studs, ported AND polished,,,

now that's a beast...

If you gonna swap out tranny's, may as well do it right and put in a ford 9 in rear-rear end.

Blaspheme, I know.

Find you a 430 with a 4 barrel carb from an old burick deuce and a quarter, my 1st car, thing would fly top end. Can be geared to pick up on the front end or put in a boat as well, hehe

No no no...
a short tailed turbo 400 with a high stall speed torque converter and a 488 12 bolt chevy differential will do nicely.

But if it's a real drag racer, a two speed powerglide tranny is the way to go,,,

That's why they make a lot of different cars, dude. Somebody thought the Avalanche looked nice... it didn't, IMO.

Pacer? Gremlin? Those were ugly cars. The 66 Impala SS was beautiful.

Hard to beat the ls6.. no factory small block could come close.
28. Author: grmcooperDate: Mon, 7/30/2012, 8:42PM EST
HD The 383 chevy is a 400 crank and 350trans block. Damn rookies.
29. Author: hill5673Date: Mon, 7/30/2012, 8:44PM EST
Small blocks for cars, Big blocks for trucks. For the money you would spend on a mild big block you could build a SB with more HP and spin higher RPMs.
My 72 Nova has a 355 roller motor and has PLENTY of nuts for street/strip fun.

Did someone say stroking????

Ford is better and everyone knows it. Chevys are for people who turn wrenches like a monkey.

Course all you people in flyover country only have straight roads anyways so a crappy car that doesnt turn doesn't matter.

Looks like Wheel has been reading a hot rod mag and feels empowered. You go boyyyyyyyyyy!

Only way I could think of is if it was solid lifters and not hydraulic lifter and the same could be said about the flat tappet lifters they need adjusted pretty often

The only thing Ford did right was to put the distibutor in the front. Try taking a 302 or 351 Ford SB past 6k RPMs...

Yea, for the type of application I am talking about I would never use hydraulics.

Mopar for me back then, 383's 440 twin 4 brls and 426 Hemis were my world.

(72 Sebring+ with 383 RR engine, slapstick auto for me back then)

A 69 396 Chevelle vs. 383 RR the race went both ways depending on the night. Both were great street cars.

Chevys? 302Z Camaro was a very kool and fast machine, looked as fast as they ran.
