Let me know I could send a few samples your way. I’ve never smoked a pipe but thought I might give it a go. Ordered a cob and a couple ozs of luxury twist flake and something called pirate kake. Thought I would ask on here before I threw any more darts blindfolded. From what I’ve read, it sounds like I would probably lean towards Va’s, but who knows? I do have some cigars or cashola around here that I could swap for some samples. Frank, I would typically heed your advice but Z seems like a reasonable feller. |

The Pirate Kake is a big Latakia blend. Try the Virginia first as the Kake will ghost that pipe (you’ll taste it in everything you smoke). Good start to get an idea of what you like there. Try those two and let me know what you think.......the LTF is going to be more prone to delights, gurgling and tongue bite but I like it better myself. It’s a little more regimented than cigars but it’s enjoyable. |

I first tried smoking a pipe in high school, then every couple of years tried again but never could really hack it. My decision to quit cigarettes began my pipe smoking era. What I looked for was a decent aroma and bite free taste. Cobs helped with the bite, then the cleaning of the pipes became time consuming. Non-aromatics didn't provide a good aroma or taste, so I went with aromatics. Smoked many kinds of pipes with several gimmicks, but finally settled on E A Carey pipes with the magic inch system which needed much less maintenance. Finally became a fan of black cavendish tobaccos but still look for something that might be as good or better for me. Cut way back on the pipe smoking 20 some odd years ago when I bought tobaccos in 5 lb. bags. Always get back to pipe smoking when time is limited or it's cold out. |

Thanks for the info, fellas. After smelling the Pirate Kake, I chickened out and jar’d it. Not sure I’m ready for that one yet. Tongue bite aside, I enjoyed the LTF. Very sweet, but enjoyable.
Probably need to work on techniques for a while and develop my palate a bit before I get too crazy about blends. There is definitely more of an art to the pipe than cigars.
Gonna grab another cob and maybe one or two more blends. Any suggestions on a straight VA blend? Maybe a burley/Va??? Thanks in advance.

3677 & 3678 PS LTF in a cob. Don't feel bad ........I won't smoke anything with Latakia in it.If I want to taste a camp fire I'll damn well build my own and cook on it. Technique will come with time. Look to MM Country Gentleman, the MM Great Dane Egg is my favorite but almost impossible to find. The CG's are very good. Cobs just scream Va's and Vapers.Send me your snailer........I have some excellent Vapers I could send sampler's of. 3679~H & H Anni Kake |

Phil, don't mistake kindness for weakness!
I once mentioned that I had an interest in pipes. Whistlebritches, ZRX, and Dave W who no longer posts coordinated a 3 Pirate attack on my sorry azz.
That was a few years ago, I don't post when I smoke a bowl or two, but I still haven't finished it all. Tons of baccy, pipes, pipe cleaners, pipe tool, magazines...and they don't even like me cuz I'm a liberal!
I keed, I keed.
Overall, I'd say pipe baccy has more and better flavors to discover, but it's just so easy to grab a cigar and start relaxing so I smoke those way more often than pipes. But I like pipe tobacco more.
Also, do most pipe smokers use the "filters"? |

The "magic inch" is not actually a filter or anything that Drafter has. It's a paper like sleeve that meters air into the pipe smoke being drawn. There was another air adding pipe called the aerosphere, but it didn't work anywhere near as well as the "magic inch". I've smoked the Dr. Grabow pipe with a filter, but all it seems to do is stop or slow down a hot ember. |

They do impede smoke volume on some but not all pipes. not sure if they are needed or not. |

The Latakia is smokey but it burns cool, don’t be afraid of it. You wanna be afraid try some of the Tamboluka stuff Gregg sent me or some Peterson Perfect Plug....that’ll put you on your Kiester. If I was only allowed one type it would be VaPer. I like the sweet pepper. VaBur is good too, burley generally has a nuttier taste but to me I feel the nicotine with burley. It’s hard to go wrong with a VaPer it usually just strength and quality of tobacco differences IMO (well that and the ammount of Perique).
