What cubans are ya smoking?
3001. Author: nolenDate: Wed, 6/6/2018, 2:03PM EST

JOSE L. PIEDRA Cazadores.

Hey all, I've been away for a while - serious health issues, but I did smoke one of these this morning on the porch It's been sitting in my humi since 2012 and It turned out to be simply amazing. They come in bundles and tend to have a prominent ammonia smell. This is my second bundle and I'm convinced some high ammonia cigars can become fantastic with humi time.

Thankfully you didn’t pay for it.
Was it presented as a fake, or as a potential fraud?
How did you confirm it was fake?

Well normally cigars such as these don't taste like complete dog-chit and äss.

Where you guys get all those aged cigars? I was in Havana a few weeks ago. I prowled 4 or 5 LCdH and the oldest I saw of anything I was looking for was Nov 2017. A box of Monte 2 with those new bands is a beautiful sight and I am too old to age them 5 years. I’ll try one in 6 months

Way too true, DED, but a LCdH has always been too far away, and I've never tried or trusted internet sources.i had a Honduran puro a couple weeks ago. Can't believe it was as good as I remember.

buy a Perfecdraw. Best cigar related $40 I have ever spent, but I think they are selling them for even cheaper now.

I’ve been thinking about it for a couple years but in a pinch, the toothpicks always seemed to work...until last night. d'oh!

However, with that being said, I don’t run into too many plugged cigars so i’ll probably forget about this experience next week.

Be patient. I smoked a couple from the box when they were relatively fresh and they were good, but the rest has been worth the wait.

Best CC I ever smoked was an '09 H Upmann 2 that you sent me, Kyle. It will have some competition, though -- as soon as I get into the others you sent. I'm being patient.

I've enjoyed RASS, PSD4, Monte 2, Trini Reyes, and JLo2 recently. All were from '13 and could probably have benefited from some age.

I've got a ton of smokes from Pro but I don't know how old they are, so I haven't gotten into them yet.

Has anybody had the Cohiba Lanceros or the Monte Especiales? Got my eye on those as I love that vitola.

.
I just wanted to say it's nice to see appreciation for great cigars especially the rare, old ones.
Most people and curiously even cigar smokers I know think that "fresh" is somehow better!
When you run into a cigar shop salesperson who tries to impress you with "These are FRESH!" it's too funny!
.
So keep up the good work. It must be an uphill battle!
.
BTW I had a 5-year old Graycliff Gran Cru last year that was really close to heaven: $32/stick is a bargain!

You might enjoy hearing that I used an eight-inch long drill bit, 3/32" diameter, with a battery drill motor to open up a too-tight cigar and it WORKED. I had to run it from the head lengthwise all the way through out the other end. Very tricky. I removed about a half teaspoon of tobacco from the core of it. This was a ring gauge 58 cigar and at 70% humidity so the wrapper didn't crack in the process. If you drill out a dry cigar you'll probably wreck the wrapper because you have to handle it a lot while drilling.

The cigar smoked just fine, only a little hard on the draw, but an enormous improvement because before drilling there was virtually NO draw and I couldn't even keep it lit. I took my cigar, drill bit and drill motor to the cigar shop to show the owner what was going on. The shop owner was so impressed he gave me another cigar for free just to thank me for the demonstration. He said he had had two customers come back complaining of hard draw cigars and he didn't know what to do about it. I suggested he could also offer long drill bits for sale, since most everyone already has a Makita battery drill.

FWIW I saw a review here for a somewhat sort-of new blend that claims to have captured that "something special" that Cuban tobacco has, by duplicating the soil and climate conditions of Cuba on the mainland.

But I don't recall where it was. If anyone is interested I'll try to find it.

I have a friend who travels to Cuba every year, and he told me the place to go is just about anywhere OUT OF HAVANA.

He likes to rent a car and drive out on any of the many remote dirt roads that go into the growing hillsides outside the city, and just keep going until you're about a third tank down on gas. Then look for a little old hut with an old man inside rolling cigars. He says there are thousands of these guys out there.

It helps to know some Spanish, but not entirely necessary. Just buy some cigars, you won't be disappointed.
He said his fondest memory was a very skilled artist who insisted on charging no more than ten cents per stick.
My friend tried to convince him that they were worth more than that but the old man was offended.
It was like, "They're only this much and if you don't like it then leave." So he liked it, very much, and bought about 20 boxes for something like $30 total. The old man was happy! The cigars were unforgettably great.

Not sure what to do about finding OLD CIGARS, but great cigars handmade by OLD MEN are a dime each, apparently.

Johnny O Genios from the December split, only about a 1/3 in and I was about to say they need more rest but it just took a turn for the better on me. I'll update when finished.

Update:

Finished really good. It had a creamy smoke to it with an oak and a touch a pepper profile on the retro for the final 2/3. I would say they are ready to be smoked but am going to sit on the next couple another 6 months to see how it changes. Might grab a corona next because burned one of those rott.
