Ok, let's open this thing up! I am an avid horror movie fan and love the genre as a whole (horror events, gore, and Halloween is my favorite "holiday"). I am a fan of the older, classic flicks. These are usually the ones you don't find on TV much anymore. I like the stuff from the 60's to around 2000 mainly because it is my era.

I'm not a fan of the new school ghost movies or the ones with a bunch of stoner kids running around being chased. No real plot, no scare, no gore, no real villain.

I have my current list of classic faves: Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974 & early 2000's version) , Carrie (1970), Halloween H20 (this was the 20th anniversary chapter), Stephen King - The Shining, Amityville Horror (original 1979, but remake was also good), Friday the 13th (original 1980 but I like remake also) Jaws, and Psycho (1998 version) to name a handful.

I need some new suggestions to find out what you guys like and find new stuff I haven't seen yet. This is what I do on the weekends. Major hobby. I don't collect yet, I just watch.

What are your favorite classic horrors / thrillers and why?
Were they worthy of a sequel and how come?

Generally, I claim to dislike the horror genre. However, I do like and appreciate those that screw with your head, as opposed to in your face stuff.

So, I have a pretty short list:
Shining
Vertigo
Rosemary's Baby
Silence of the Lambs
Original Carrie....but really only about 3 bits...the gym doors closing, the bucket of blood and then the killer final seconds


never mind...I guess I appreciate thrillers....not horror so much....lol...There was Freddy Krueger movie that I really liked -- it didn't take itself too seriously and the comedic bits were well done....I think it was the 3rd or 4th one.

I actually was thinking I would check out the original Nightmare on Elm tonight. Never saw.

Love Silence of Lambs. Classic. Saw Rosemary's but don't think I remember it.

Aliien and Species come to mind along with several of Stephen King's like Pet Sematary,Thinner, Rose Red, Misery and others.

2001 A Space Odyssey, The Exorcist also came to mind.

Melanie Daniels(Tippi Hedron) is the modern rich socialite, part of the jet-set who always gets what she wants. Not really a “horror guy” but The Shining (1980) and The Exorcist (1973) are probably tops for me in that genre. Here are a few not mentioned that might be off the radar. I enjoyed all of these for different reasons, but you might consider a few to be the stupid horror they make today.

Original Halloween is one of my favorites and love the original Nightmare but watch it with the timeframe in mind. Aspects and some effects have not aged well.

Evil Dead (original) - though has some gore, many points awarded for Ash first using the Broomstick

I second 28 Days Late ( Contention for best zombie flick ever) and Cabin in the Woods (love the concept but won't spoil it) and Alien was just plain awesome.

Might be more suspense than straight horror but I thought A Quiet Place was excellent

Definitely the original Omen, also Possesed.

One of the few sequels hat I really liked was Halloween 3 Season of the witch. I saw the Illustrated Man - believe it was Rod Steiger -, but I don't remember much about it.

I watched this when I was like 10 and it was the scariest thing because I had never seen people break down and turn on each other like they did in addition to the traps and claustrophobic feeling of the whole thing. Right before bedtime too of course. Not sure if I want to watch it again or not

Everyone is talking about 28 days later.. I guess I will try that one. I saw The Others on Shudder last night... So I will be adding to my watchlist.

Think it goes further than that, even back to silent film. Nosferatu was early 20s, Phantom of the Opera was mid 20s. 30s brought Dracula, Freaks, Frankenstein, Jekyl and Hyde, etc. I think 30s was when genre was first named as "horror"

Trust me, Hellraiser has been thought about. It was the first on my mind. But weird as it sounds, I never was a fan.

I liked Jeepers 1 & 2.

Everyone is talking about Freaks for old-time one. Seems like a safe bet.

Freaks..... some things can't be unseen.


I still suggest Sleepaway Camp. It's Friday the 13th with a twist at the end that scarred me for life.
