Former NFL Green Bay Packers QB and Pro Football Hall of Famer Bart Starr passed away today at 85.
Maybe not the most physically talent quarterback but his mental toughness was matched by only a few. Winner of 5 NFL championship titles, NFL MVP in 1966, MVP of Super Bowls I and II. The Ice Bowl. In my book, the greatest GB quarterback of all-time.
RIP #15.

Several years ago, I was in Lake Geneva Wisconsin and was having lunch in a pretty nice place when in walked Bart Starr. It was like Jesus himself came into the room. He was very gracious and talked to everyone that talked to him. I simply shook his hand and told him it was pleasure to meet him. It was pretty neat. It will be a statewide mourning in Wisconsin. The Cheeseheads loved him |

^^^ Cool story. Have read many stories about him being a really nice guy so doesn’t surprise me that he was so gracious when you saw him. ^^^
My one and only Bart Starr moment was many, many moons ago. He was a guest on a sports talk show so I frantically dialed in and got to be the first person to talk to him. Even though it was on the telephone, I felt so nervous to be on a nationwide show and talking to one of my boyhood heroes. Blurted out a question asking who was the greatest player he had ever coached. Was so giddy that to this day I can’t recall his response but think he never actually named a player, mostly likely mentioned a few (...probably along the lines of James Lofton, Lynn Dickey...) but never named just one. |

RIP. A true legend of the NFL and Wisconsin.
Before my time. Never got to see him play.
But the old Lambeau field was a magical place to be.
Like they plopped a stadium into an old neighborhood and park. With references to Bart Starr everywhere. An incredible experience.
New stadium is still amazing, though not quite the same. |
