81954 Aganorsa Leaf Nicaragua Aniversario with thanks to jeebling.

First light some light bready notes, lil woody, good bit of pepper on retro. Fairly dry. A nice spice blend joins the party a half inch in. After the first ash drop it surely earned an invitation to the pants party. All sorts of things happening and they're playing well together. There's aromatic spices, hot peppers, fruits, caramels, and the texture is much richer than at the start. I've been itching to explore Aganorsa Leaf but haven't yet. I'm on call so I hope I get to finish it.

81956: ROMEO by Romeo y Julieta Toro 6 x 54
These have been in the storage for 2 months. The first couple I had were pretty good but this one with a week or 2 more on it was catching a higher gear. Most notably, the cigarette harshness was missing. The 54 ring gauge is a bit too large for what is turning out to be my preferred gauge. I thought the 60 ringers were going to be my thing but that only works for me on the NUB. I think 52 is a big gauge for my liking and 48-50 is just about right. For now anyway lol. This however was a great vitola for this blend in my opinion.
The cigar had a slightly compost barnyard scent. Possibly a hint of cocoa on cold draw along with the nice pleasant tobacco flavor of course. Kickoff with pepper, earth, leather and a sweet finish. The leather predominantly leads the way with the sweet aftertaste and very smooth retro. Definitely has a nice body, I’ll say medium +. The first transition the leather hangs in there, in the distant background the sweetness gets an occasional touch of vanilla and the flavors of dried fruit, not the sweetness of dried fruit but the flavor. A mineral savory note builds throughout the second third and by final third the vanilla ghost has vanished. There could be a flavor of toasted nuts, toasted cashew maybe. The cigar has more body than nicotine strength which is preferable to me. The breakout flavors were faint and left me wanting one solid hit of flavor. Frustrating. All in all a solid score of “good” but certainly not great. I’m hoping the remaining 1 or 2 will get even better with some rest.

I like the Midnight Express a lot. I almost smoked one tonight. Maybe tomrorow.

These have not lost too much of their strength after 14 years. Definitely mellowed but still have a black pepper, spice and dark fruit profile with a little citrus note that I don't remember from my last tasting.

Speaking of EPC, what’s your opinion of La Gloria Cubana?

81975 All Saints Colorado with thanks to jeebling. I know nothing about this cigar but I have seen the name on retailers websites.

First light dry mildly astringent texture straight out the gate. That's no good. Flavors are pleasant, bready like a pretzel, little red pepper retro but not much. First ash drop its gone straight for wood and the flavor you get from the old lick em n stick em postage stamps. Burn is sharp no touchups. Ash is firm. Seems like it could be a decent yard gar if you can tolerate a dry habano profile. I can not. Nothing about this cigar is unique or interesting. Cracked open a root beer to help. Tastes like any of the cigars from brands that sell cigars but aren't cigar artists. Like the STG/Gen/altadis groups. That's fine for many people as evidenced by the volume they sell, but it's not for me.

Looked it up, halfwheel gave it an 89 but reading the review it seems to be close to my experience. Mild flavors, astringent, not much there to excite or offend. I put it down halfway.

Jeebs as for the four kicks the capa especial is my personal favorite but I also tend to like Sumatra.

Dan, it’s excellent to see the 2 reviews on the Saints. I haven’t tried them yet. I do enjoy the MSA wrapper with the salty gritty metallic molasses thing going on so maybe that one will be good for me in a few months when I get to it. Astringent is a big turn off for me though. Thanks for being the canary in the coal mine for me lol

81980: Punch Diablo Scamp (Toro) 6.1 x 50
Smells of barnyard and cocoa, cold draw same and hint of cherry. Beautiful shiny Ecuadorian Oscuro Sumatra, solid feeling, practically invisible seems, well distributed smallish veins. Held a long charcoal ash like new money. Very much cayenne and black pepper on kickoff, earthy and charred wood that built throughout first third. Generous draw. Into first third a very distinct Dr. Pepper and background orange peel, molasses taste. Second third Dr. Pepper, woody, dried cherry. Second third started burning warm then got hot. Slowed down puffing and that brought it back into warm range. Last third was getting somewhat bitter with stronger molasses and orange peel. Last third flavors have fallen off quickly. Throughout the only flavor that really broke out was the Dr. Pepper on retro. Halfway into last third it got really hot and it was throwing off a lot of smoke. Longer time between puffs, started burning sideways. Smoked it for an hour and five. I wasn’t enjoying it so I let it die. I’ve had this cigar in storage for about 6 weeks. Another month would probably iron out some of these difficulties.

I can't say I've ever had a LGC that really blew me away. Closest was probably those obelisk looking ones they usednto have years ago. I'd pretty much given up on EPC for a while there, until I finally tried the pledge line and was impressed (though not as impressed lately as the prices have crept up on them). Still haven't sampled much outside of that.
