If you won the PowerBall lottery who, from CBid, would you tell?
1. Author: PalamaDate: Mon, 4/8/2024, 3:31PM EST
All? Some? None?
2. Author: rfenstDate: Mon, 4/8/2024, 3:54PM EST
I'd try to put the ticket in a trust and assign a lawyer to obtain the funds. The trust title would not reveal my name other than my illegible signature at the end. Problem is that the state publicizes winners' names. Transparency kind of thing.... Though, I sure do wish I had such a problem!
3. Author: BuckyB93Date: Mon, 4/8/2024, 4:03PM EST
None of your bidness.

For large payouts, in many states your can't remain anonymous since the winners hometown, the amount of the prize won, the date it was won and were is was purchased is technically public record and subject to disclosure laws. Some state can disclose your full name, others first name and first letter of your last name. I'm sure the specific details are in the fine print on the back of the ticket.

I'd try to keep in on a only need to know basis like close and trusted family and friends.

I'd set them up family for life so they didn't have to worry about money. The older ones I trust that they wouldn't burn it on stupid stuff. The younger ones I'd set up some sort of allowance system so they wouldn't become spoiled rich kids and burn it away, they'd still had to work in life. I'd an anonymously donate to some local causes that I'd like to support.

Those huge million and billion jackpots are more money than I could ever burn away. No idea what I would do with the bulk of it. I like the trust fund thing that Robert mentioned.

One time, some guy from another cigar board, who knew none of us, bombed like 10-20 people with each bomb customized to the recipients'' personal preferences. I got five Cubans in a brand new hard plastic cigar carrier, which I still use. I did everything I could to figure out who it was, but couldn't even learn who on CBid gave out our addresses. Still cannot believe it to this very day.

I’d give my ticket to someone here who lives in a state where you don’t have to publicize your name.
My one caveat would be that person never tell anyone it wasn’t them who bought the ticket.
They’d pay all the taxes, deal with lawyers and accountants. For that, they’d get the majority of the proceeds. A 60/40% kind of breakdown.

No press, no fuss nor muss for Russ.

To answer this question I'd need to buy a lottery ticket, so I cannot answer.

Well, I answered anyway, I'd be on the phone with my financial advisor.

If any of you do win a big pot, I wish you the best. Do be careful, from what I've read, it can bring out the worst in people, like a death in a family, but far worse.

Mo money, mo problems.

Figure out how much we're getting after tax, title and raping by the gov't... split that evenly between my account and the wife's (yes, we have separate accounts). She can help who she wants and I can help who I want.

She'd likely buy property and build a house in the Philippines, as well as helping her family. We'd probably buy a house for the kid and give him enough to live comfortably for the rest of his life.

I'd give some to my sister, niece and nephews. Then help a few friends with enough to alleviate any money worries.

Lease a condo in Baja, buy a very well equipped fishing boat and dock it there. And spend an awful lot of time fishing in the Sea of Cortez.

I would tell a few select friends on here. I would not be concerned if the whole world knew. I would take the one time payout, buy something very nice for my wife, and invest the rest of it.

I'm pretty sure it could be rigged, but the last time I saw the Georgia lottery broadcast they were blowing numbered pingpong balls out of a machine to pick the numbers. Anything done with computers can be hacked.

The ball machines have been tampered with in the past. One story I remember was a long time ago a guy rigged the machine with specially weighted balls.

When it comes to money, trust no one.

[If any of you do win a big pot, I wish you the best. Do be careful. Most people would burn through $100k within 18 months.

I am talking about the ones who got at least $100k in their pockets Everybody they know wants to borrow money for the business they always dreamed of, but could never have achieved. Their family members and friend were given unrepaid loans. When the businesses or ventures failed, they never got repaid.

So, I started telling my clients all of this in the hope it would scar the hell out of them to protect themselves. None listened. Thereafter, whenever I had a large recovery for a client that sufficiently could change the rest of their life economically, I would take them downtown to meet with MY accountant for an hour so he could scare the **** out of them and reinforce what I was telling them to do with the money. Was only truly successful a couple of times, but it was worth it. Almost everyone who catches a windfall spends it all.

So, if anyone here ever catches a windfall of any sort, please start out with a Trust Lawyer, Financial Planner and an Accountant to set everything up the right way to minimize their chance of squandering the windfall.

I'd set-up my family members with Trusts so that they couldn't piss it away and so they would have a financially good life. I would then anonymously pay off any long-term debt (mortgages) for all of the Jewish houses of worship and important community services/charities in town .Then, I'd set my wife and I up and PISs AWAY as much of the rest as we reasonably could over the rest of our lives.

Laugh

Goes without saying that I’d buy a chitload of One-Ton Chips. Heck, mebbe even invest in Maebo’s so that the business could flourish and not worry about finances. At that point I’d make sure we expand our distribution to everywhere on the Mainland except PA ‘cause, you know, Keltic can’t have any. Shame on you

Maybe I should consider a lottery ticket after all. LOL

Ye who voted to tell secretly has too much trust and faith in people to keep a secret.

If we’re talking about ending up with 10 million or more, I’d set up a trust as discussed above. I’d spend a heck of a lot more than $100K in 18 months. I’d buy a piece of land, build a house, shop, pool and pool house, kennels and stables and I’d have appropriate security measures installed though I’m not exactly sure what those would be. I’d pay off family’s bills and mortgages. Then I’d throw a huge party, Vegas maybe, and I’d pay for any friends and family that wanted to attend. Open bar and open humidor.
But I’d have to tell Jake to leave all his snakes at home. Not even a small pocket snake, Jake! Jake the Snake would have an embarrassment of all the best / favorite cigars he could think of and I’d hire a contractor to build him a state of the art walk-in humidor and smoking room.

EDIT: *Shpo

I’d tell nobody, but I would set up everyone I have an addy for with some sort of monthly sex toy membership.

And I would build a sandwich stop next to DrafterX’s house.

Would you upgrade the van, or too many fond memories?
36. Author: ZRX1200Date: Tue, 4/9/2024, 6:40PM EST
Probably update the candy selection. Bare minimum get a coating station so the “M&Ms” don’t say roofie.

I forgot one item.

Buy a robot or something to nag my kids to clean their bedrooms. Teenagers... need I say more?
38. Author: Speyside2Date: Wed, 4/10/2024, 6:17PM EST
I would not care who knew. Inevitably the media coverage would allow anyone who wanted to know to know. Even though I no longer smoke we would throw a darned big party with food, booze, and cigars. Anyone who wanted to come would be welcome. I would also buy my wife a really nice gift. The rest we would invest.

You purposefully injected irrelevant, divisive politics into a non-political thread (that is not even in the Political Section). This is a General Discussion of insignificance to your misdirection away from winning the lottery- toward your political views.
