Tips for smoking while driving......

Going on a 500+ mile road (each way) trip to visit family, and I'm driving solo.
So, plan to smoke a cigar or three on the way up and back....
Have never smoked a cigar in a car........
Have a 93 Geo Metro (no laughing please, at least I get to drive by a few gas stations).
It has no wind-wing window, just a big single window that comes down to nice corner right next to the steering wheel.
I have a heavy, short, fat glass jar (formerly jam) with a good screw-top lid that I'll use as an ashtray.

My plan was to crack the window just a bit, and hold the stick in my left hand a few inches from the window, and I'm hoping/assuming the draft will suck the smoke out?
I also plan to wear my "smoking clothes" when I do smoke.
Will my Geo smell like cigars forever??
Any other tips/suggestions great appreciated.

thanks for that tip - won't run the heater then!
I never run the AC anyways - the Geo complains about that (it's the 3 cyl/1 liter model) - it has a hard enough time just hauling me around!

Mother ship sells the Xikar car ashtray. Iv seen it and would recommend getting one.
I laughed when I read this because it reminds me of when I was 18 and I didn't want my parents to know I was smoking..... He he.
Most importantly, you need somewhere safe to rest your cigar and to dump the ash so it doesn't fall on you and cause an accident or incindent.
Safe travels bro!

I smoke in the car from time to time...folks who ride in the car are always surprised at that fact, as it does not smell of tobacco. Here is my method:
Crack driver window 1-1.5 inches. Nothing else is open.
Set heat or A/C to "fresh intake", not recirculate.
Put the fan speed on 2-3, select upper vents, (NOT defrost, or any combination...dunno about the floor registers, that may work too) and point the registers toward the floor, but still open.
All this will create a higher cabin pressure that will urge all the smoke to the single point of escape.
Keep the stick near the window once lit.
I have the Csonka Automotive air purifier running all the time the car is running. Works GREAT.
Occasionally, I frebreze the car and let it air in the breeze.

That's it...I burn 2-4 a month in the car, and there is hardly ever a whiff of it in the upholstery.
Works for me, I am sure someone else here may have a different method.

I just enjoyed one the other day in the wife's car (she had my car with the kid) and I sparked one up. I had the drivers window all the way down but I kept the cigar right behind the side mirror while driving and I had my hand out the window while at a light. I was doing all city driving so that probably doesn't help you much but that worked for me. She got in her car later that night to run an errand and I didn't hear anything about it.

I smoke everyday my car, usually just leave the air or heat on and roll down the window on the driver side only about 2 inches(so I could ash), once I arrive to the destination I crack down the window on the passenger side the same amount, no smell in the summer, in the winter after a month like this setup the car will start to have a cigar smell, when that happens I just bring in an ozone generator to run in the car while the air or heat is running for about 15 minutes, then it's all good again.

Interesting theory Watch... do you have the window shade things around your windows? I've done alot of commercial hvac systems where tested smoke evac by basically doing the same thing.. the zone where the alarm goes off goes into full evac while the others pressurize the building.. but if your doing 70mph down the highway air is being forced in the car as well...Think : -k

I do pretty much the same thing, Watchurai has it right, the idea is to have positive pressure in your cabin. Window cracked maybe 1/2'' for me because I don't ash out the window and I do have the vent shades. I use one of those Bobken car ashtrays made just for cigars, it has a hook to catch on the window slot. You are able to even set your cigar down as it has a small rest for it. The ashes fall through a small hole and immediately snuffs out anything burning.
I enjoy a cigar everyday going to and coming from work, 45 minute commute. My truck may smell a bit, if someone else got in they might notice it but I don't. I have it detailed twice a year so it seems fine.
Been doing this for years, should work for ya.

Used a couple of the Bobken cigar ashtrays while traveling across the country with a buddy. At times 2 smokes going at once with windows cracked and outside air vents open. Fabreze and Oust work wonders. Haven't used any of the plug-in air purifiers or ozone generators. Do old-school instead with a small clay vessel hanging from rearview with scented oil inside. Truck smells like snickerdoodle and makes me hungry just driving it. Doesn't smell like cigar though. RainX on the inside of the windows helps with the smoke residue.

Here is what I do:

Crack sunroof 1-2";
Fresh air intake and blower on high;
Point the a/c vents towards the rear passengers' side window, except for the drivers' side vent, which should be pointed up, but point it towards your left so that it blows the smoke backwards to your left; and
Crack rear passenger seat about 2".
(Friend taught me this.)

Most important thing is to leave the windows fully open before you reach your destination to really air the car out. Then, leave the windows fully open and park the car so that the sun shines through and hits the seat and floor. Fabreeze is great for the carpets and upholstered seats. Do not forget the headliner. Wait a day or so to use the Fabreeze

Ozone generators are the best option.

After smoking in my wife's truck many, many times (windows open, air cranked, Fabreze, Oust, etc, etc.) and hearing her complain about the smell the next day. The best advice I can offer is leave some sort of odor/scented device in the vehicle at all times to counter the smell after smoking. Residue will cling to the glass. The smoke will be absorbed into the carpets, fabrics, etc. But so will the the scented device if left in the vehicle. Fabreze and Oust work well but only go so far. Once the smoke is absorbed into the upholstery foam there's no disguising or getting rid of it. Detailing the interior of the vehicle regularly will also help a lot.

I also use this method, minus the Febreeze. I like Lysol.

No window shade thingys. Air forced into the car is the idea, then forced out through a single exit. I can actually exhale smoke and watch it pull across my vision and out the window. Plus, using the driver window, I can direct my exhalation, further ensuring the majority of particulate leaves the car.

I like the tip on Rain-x inside though...the residue on the winshield is a pain in the can to clean off...

I am glad we have finally agreed on something!!!

Fabreeze contains enzymes that break down odor causing organic molecules. My understanding of Lysol is that it is a disinfectant that kills bacteria- and smells nice to some people. Try Ffabreeze (or the like) first, then Lysol a day or so later and let us know if that works better!

I never smoked in my car until recently and since I don't smoke cigarettes I was concerned about lingering odors. This is what I do and it has worked for me so far.

Roll the window down as far as you can and be comfortable. Go to grocery store are Target/K-Mart etc and get a jar or two of odor absorbing beads (these things are worth their weight in gold!), these are much better than "deodorizers" like Febreeze, Ozium etc. You can actually see after a few weeks when the beads shrink as they absorb ambient odors. Agree with the others about running heat or A/C, if the smoke is in the car it will circulate through your system and poof! it is there forever. Also recommend using a little "negative" ventilation by opening the rear window on the passenger side a bit to pull any lingering smoke out while the car is in motion.

Get some ozium spray. Most chain drug stores sell it. I think hospitals and used car dealers use it to deoderize. You can spray it in the vents too.

I do the window and ac vent thing but before I fire up I either bring a "red solo cup" from home or stop and get a small soft drink from a choke n puke, drink that and use the melted ice in the cup for an ashtray, then when I get home I pop the lid back on and trash it. Dont have to deal with a smelly ashtray when I light up again.

I smoke to and from work everyday. My biggest issue was smoke being attracted to inside of windshield. Crack the windows, use outside/fresh air on the heat/AC and run thing on defroster the whole time. With the defroster on the smoke never hits the inside of windshield or dash.

Stop by a restaurant supply place or Wally World and get a Stainless Steel Spice Shaker, ~$2usd. looks just like the X..... car ashtray without the wire thingy inside.

If you don't put leave butts in the ashtray, it won't smell. And the SS shakers have a screw on lid.

With summer coming on, I'm trying to decide if I can smoke while riding the motorcycle. Any tips on that?

Herfing Herfing Herfing I smoke everyday in my car, I keep the windows up and the heater on all the time. I ash in the manufactures ashtray, and burn some holes in the seat. But, I use a spray that takes it all out. It smells like fresh clothes. The best part is when I go to get out, it's like that scene from that one movie Cheech and Chong Up in smoke. Plus, licking the windows for extra nicotine. Herfing Herfing Herfing

Unless you have a dresser or something with a windshield it's gonna be tough. It is possible though, just don't concentrate on the smoke and not the road.
