AVO freebie

So, after receiving my AVO freebie a week or so ago, I decided to smoke it tonight. It was a classic tubo robusto. This was my first AVO, and I was unsure of what to expect, but I certainly wasn't expecting what I got, which can only be described as OLD LADY PERFUME. I've seen some of the ACID cigars described this way, but is this standard for an AVO? I'm not talking about aroma - the aroma was quite pleasant, but the TASTE nearly gagged me. My wife usually takes a single draw from my cigar, and replies with simple descriptions such as "mild" or "harsh" or (!) "smoky", but when she took a draw from this one, I kept an eye on her to see if it was just me or if she would notice it too - she almost choked and said "it tastes like my grandma!" Needless to say I was disappointed, but I can't complain - it was a freebie. So I'm just curious, has anyone else experienced this? I always give a new cigar 2 or 3 tries, maybe more, before reaching a final decision on future purchases, but I gotta say, if this is typical AVO, I am truly not interested.

thanks!

Hmmmmmm...I got the exact same freebie, and mine was really good. Guess I was lucky. Don't let it turn you off to AVO, maybe you'd like the Domaine, XO, Maduro, or Signature better. AVO is one of the best-made cigars, with construction like a dream. Very full-bodied, almost like a Cuban I think.

Give AVO another chance though. They are great cigars.

I received the Domaine as my freebee and it was really great. So I went out and bought a variety of AVO to see if they were all this good. I smoked the Signature and it was exactly as you described above an I couldn't even smoke 1/2 of it. I was very disappointed but thought it was just that line so went on and only 1 of the remaining 3 were as good as the freebee I received. I do not remeber which one but it wasn't the Domaine.

So my conclusion after 3 out of 5 cigars being bad to horrible, the same line not being anywhere near the same quality and the price of these smokes is to stay away. I now treat AVO the same as I do ACID, walk right past them in the humi and go onto something better.

This is a funny post! Classifying AVO with ACIDs is outrageous!

AVO does NOT go in for perfuming their tobacco. They are a good blend with age. Their Signature line is on the mild side, but their XO and domaine are more potent. I really enjoy their Maduro line when looking for a nice smooth and tasty cigar.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Have not had the bad experience with the AVO. Like any brand, some are better to my taste than others, but I have liked all of them. Also got the freebie, a robusto I think, and enjoyed it as much as any of the others. Don't really know what could have happened to make it taste perfumey...........AVO doesn't flavor cigars to the best of my knowledge. And if they did, I don't think they would send one as a freebie........unless they were promoting a new line.

That's odd, I got an AVO Classic Robustos and it was mild and smooth. No nasty taste or anything.
It was nice, but I found that if anything, it was lacking in taste. Must be just me. :)

I have smoked several XO lately and thought they were mild but good. I have yet to try the 'freebie'. It arrived squashed.

tried the freebie and I love the Def sea in the acid line. They are NO where near the same Cigar. Mild and mellow in the avo freebie. I would smoke again I just have to be in the mood. I am a moody person in the Cigar line. Sometimes I like the mellow, sometimes I like the in between and then there are time I like the kick me in the butt hard kind LOL

Smoked mine tonight after 3 weeks in the humidor. Absolutely delicious and an aftertaste that I am still enjoying an hour later. No perfume at all. One of the best tasting mild cigars I have ever had.

Maybe your freebie was shipped next to a box of Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds perfume that broke a bottle or two. I've been smoking AVO's for a year or so and prefer the Petit Bellicosa in the original line. It is a little mild and a tad bit sweet but nothing I would deem flavored or perfumed. All of the AVOs have excellent construction but I actually prefer the newer Cusano Xclusivo Belicosa Fina. All are made under the direction of Hendrick Kelner (who makes AVO, Occidental Reserve and many of the Davidoff line).

I toked mine and really liked it. It was a little dented like others have reported, but not to the point of damaged. It was my first AVO. I plan on trying some of the other line once I strike oil.
