What kind of sad day, CW? Arnie won by over a million votes. Besides, he's is almost as socially liberal as you are. That makes him more like a libertarian. It's a JOYOUS day in California! And millions of Californians agree. It's only sad for ultra-rightwing Republicans and ultra-leftwing Democrats. A pox on both their houses.

I'm afraid my beloved home state of California has just become the butt of countless jokes across the country.

My favorite trope from this campaign: 'Arnold is the man to lead us out of economic despair.'

Does anyone really think that Schwarzenegger is a great and creative economic thinker? Of course not. It amazes me what people will say without thinking.

I dream of the day when state and federal elections are won, regardless of party affiliation, by the best and brightest thinkers. I know, 'keep dreaming.'

Is it really all that much to expect, that we'd all want the smartest and most creative people running the state/country? Running an economy is complicated business. Let's get people in charge who actually understand what is going on. Again, this is non-partisan...I am much more comfortable with a conservative who is a thinker than a liberal who just reads lines and is a puppet.

I bring this up because this election seems an egregious case of not electing the bright and creative candidate.

John

PS: did anyone see the opening skit on SNL this week? Too funny.

As I have always belived, this country will keep going no matter who's in office.....
Yes Arnie won, but is he realy the guy who's going to be making all the decisions? I doubt it! Polititians(GOP) and influential (very rich) folks make all the decisions! Arnie was a mean to reach a goal. I belive in democracy and in this great country. I belive that no matter what happens, or who happens , this IS THE BEST COUNTRY TO LIVE IN!!!! BAR NONE!!!!!

Schwarzenegger received double bachelor's degrees in business administration and marketing fitness from the University of Wisconsin in 1979. He parlayed his Mr. Universe winnings into millions. If he can do the same for a state that he did for himself, why would you be against it?

Everyone was piling on him that he doesn't have political experience, but I say that he married into that! Imagine the conversations around their dinner tables! Everything that he does, he does well. He won an election that people said couldn't be done.

John,

Leadership is not about doing things yourself, its about being able to recognize talent and putting together a team that can get the job done. Arnold is rich, do you think for one minute that he manages that money himself. Who is he married to, don't you think that he might have a few connections there?

Leadership is also not about being the smartest guy in the room, it's about knowing who the smartest guy in the room is.

Odd ... I read this thread and found that in at least some respects, I agreed with some parts of every post, even though they seem to be in disagreement with one another ...

Actually, it IS a sad day of sorts ... the populist laws that made this recall possible and which also make the onslaught of initiatives on every ballot possible should not exist ... we are, IMO, plunging into chaos by rushing down this path.

It IS preferable to have a rational thinking office holder rather than an irrational robot of either party but at this point, I have absolutely NO idea whether Arnold is that rational thinker or not ... nor does anyone else ... all ANY of us has seen is his movies and his sound bites.

That said, I'm not concerned in the slightest that he's not a 'politician' ... in fact, I'm quite encouraged by that ... frankly, I'm pretty fed up with the lifelong feeders at the public trough from both parties ... I'm eager to see some outside influences

Kudos to RobertParrott for his spot-on definition of leadership ... whether we like the idea or not, whether there may have been better candidates or not, whether we voted for Arnold or not is all yesterdays news ... today, the news is that Arnold is the governor and our best hope is that he can meet Robert's definition.

Yo LT: It's easy for you to put a pox on both the democrats and Republicans houses ( K-Mart has a two- fer sale on "pox's", buy one get one free ). However look on the bright side, if the people in California don't like what Arhhhhhnold does in office they can always "TOTALLY RECALL" him. Bawahaaaaa JonR

I've been following Arnie's career since his first national TV appearance promoting his movie "Pumping Iron." He is very aggressive but has a playful and rather sweet nature. His sense of humor, native intelligence and driving ambition were plain way back then, not long out of his teens. I don't doubt for a minute that he squeezed a lot of cute Hollywood buttocks. I also don't doubt for a minute that he would have stopped with a single, emphatic "No," unlike his detractors' even more sexually agressive favorite ex-president.

I have a great deal of hope for citizen politicians and a deep distrust of career ones. All Californians should now be hoping that Arnie will be as great a success as governor as he has been in every other aspect of his life. Time will tell. I am glad he has the opportunity. I am confident he will give it everything he's got, and that's a lot. I am equally confident that even if he balances the budget and makes California a more affordable place to live it won't be enough for many of you diehards.

The last citizen politician Californians elected governor was Ronald Reagan. Reagan, agree or not, like it or not, was one of the great political leaders of the century, along with Roosevelt, Truman, and Churchill. Remember the USSR and the Berlin Wall?

Now, do you want to get rid of that awful recall law, or wait until after you use it to oust a Republican?
