I've been following Arnie's career since his first national TV appearance promoting his movie "Pumping Iron." He is very aggressive but has a playful and rather sweet nature. His sense of humor, native intelligence and driving ambition were plain way back then, not long out of his teens. I don't doubt for a minute that he squeezed a lot of cute Hollywood buttocks. I also don't doubt for a minute that he would have stopped with a single, emphatic "No," unlike his detractors' even more sexually agressive favorite ex-president.
I have a great deal of hope for citizen politicians and a deep distrust of career ones. All Californians should now be hoping that Arnie will be as great a success as governor as he has been in every other aspect of his life. Time will tell. I am glad he has the opportunity. I am confident he will give it everything he's got, and that's a lot. I am equally confident that even if he balances the budget and makes California a more affordable place to live it won't be enough for many of you diehards.
The last citizen politician Californians elected governor was Ronald Reagan. Reagan, agree or not, like it or not, was one of the great political leaders of the century, along with Roosevelt, Truman, and Churchill. Remember the USSR and the Berlin Wall?
Now, do you want to get rid of that awful recall law, or wait until after you use it to oust a Republican?
