Why hasn't Rick responded with horror regarding what DEMOCRATS are doing to destroy the youth of our country? I'm currious? Is it not a bad thing now in his eyes since it's sponsored by the libs? Interesting... That would seem to indicate no core beliefs, only hatred for the concervatives, that couldn't be the truth, could it?

428.. I would have to disagree to some degree with what you are saying.. and anyone in the Military today would probably agree with me.. to Draft/or force someone who does not want to be there would be the same imposed infraction Clinton did his first yr in the White House with the don't ask Don't tell Policy.. which is now all straightened out... to work and try and train a person who does not want to be there and feels forced to be.. is virtually impossible and you will have problems... "internal" more then what we America Needs today with so much going on already... this could and probably would cause many more Casualties.. the risks of losing highly trained and motivated people who do give a **** would deminish what has been built up of Volunteer Force over decades since Vietnam... this bill on the table is a power play for Politics and the up coming Election.... I have read in some of the military websites retention is above normal the past couple years and there is a record number enlisting over what is leaving.. But as tilted as the media portrays so isn't this bill in Congress.... a person has to have a WANT to be there additude or everyone around will suffer...
I do agree with the rest of what you have said
God Bless and Thank you and Rayder and anyone else in Public Services today....
Happy Memorial Day All

Hey hog, thanks for the response. Actually I have to agree with you about the chosen or forced service to our military. Surely those who chose to be there would likely perform much better. After all, WANTING to do something goes an awful long way in how well it will be done!

I guess I was talking (or ranting?!) more about service in general. In the beginning I did start with the draft, and then my thoughts strayed. I hear so many people saying "my child will NEVER serve in the military here, I don't care what's going on", or something to that effect. That kind of thinking really gets old. America was built on sacrifice, and the freedoms these people (all of us for that matter) enjoy were NOT free. Many others sacrificed to get to where we are. That's what I really mean. I can totally understand about the draft (it would be the same as forcing someone into a burning building if they didn't want to be firefighters, NOT a good thing!!).

As you said, Happy Memorial Day to all, and to those who serve/served thank you so much for helping make our country what it is today.

Having a draft number of 50 in '71 (4 yrs on a sub), a son in the Navy (was in the Persian Gulf when the Twin Towers went down), and #2 son looking at the Army Warrent program for helocopters not only would I, but I have, driven a son to the induction center and probably will another one. I encourage their service for several reasons. It's necessary for good people to defend their country. I know of nothing that teaches self-descipline, self-respect and team work better then the service. Also, I don't have the numbers to back it up but I'll bet the death rate for young males is higher in any major city then it is in Iraq. The way crime is in this country, they're probably safer in Iraq!
