#47 - GACK! No offense to those who like it, but tofu tastes like wallpaper paste.

#48/49 Plenty of chairs, if you don't care if they match, Dinner is at 6:30 any time you're in the neighborhood, and the back patio smoking lounge is open all night!

Tammy,

Cooper is going to be so broken up about your feelings on tofu.

PS: How do you know it tastes like wallpaper paste?

Uh, huh. Yeah, right.

You're a closet tofu fanatic. That's why you wanted me to email you all those recipes.

You can admit it, it's not like you're gay or nothing.

Oh, then again you do root for Jeff Gordon. On second thought, best you keep denying the tofu love big boy.

Re 51

I don't know where you live but if you see a thin mid aged, slightly balding, midwestern guy with an otter box lightly tapping on your patio door, put the gun down. It's only me.

Too everyone else, my kitchen is open. C'mon in.

What's in your (wallet) crock pot?

beef (a whole roast)

cut into pieces:
2 -3 large potatoes (or 5 - 6 red potatoes)
3 carrots
1 whole brown onion

1/2 cup of red wine

package of onion soup mix (the dried kind)

Meat in the cooker; veggies on top, then the wine; sprinkle the powdered mix on top of it all. Get out of the way.

6 hours on low (or, if your work hours are like mine, 10 hours on low...)

Almost impossible to screw it up. You'll be able to cut the beef with a fork.

Crock pot cooking makes my day go better (I know all day long that dinner is cooking and will be waiting for me when I walk in the door).

Well, cooper will just have to be sure to come by for dessert, then - no tofu here! GAAAAAACK! I draw the line at beets...

You'd be amazed what an interesting array of flavors you're exposed to through the "get crap on your hands then lick your thumb to wipe a smear off a kid's face" method. LOL!

I'll allow them in my house, but under protest. That's where I draw the line - tofu is on the OTHER side of the line.

That's why crock pot rock. Can't screw the meal up, set it and forget it, very little labor and the end product is finger likin' good. You also usually have leftovers for lunch the next day or so.

Leftover pot roast = pot roast for lunch. Then add some BBQ sauce and you get a BBQ sandwich for the next lunch.

Chicken dish? BBQ chicken sandwich for lunch. Pork? Same, same...

I don't use it as often as I should but I could probably live on crock pot meals.

Reality is most people screw up the cooking of or are just plain unimaginative with the use of tofu, and being a semi-chalky block of congealed goop, it's an easy food to hate under those circumstances. For some reason it has a more lasting impression when someone f's it up. Burn a piece of fish, no big deal, you'll eat it again some other time. Screw up one piece of tofu, and you're scared for life.

I find it amusing.

Freeze firm tofu, then thaw it. Then slice it into slabs, smother in sauce (teriyaki, BBQ, whatever), and put under the broiler.

(Freezing it, then thawing it gives it a more meat-like texture; my Japanese host-mother used to make this every other week or so and it was awesome.)

Scott,

You're wasting your time with this crowd when it comes to tofu. Believe me, I've tried, they won't budge.

No. That would be a chafing dish.

Well, let's not forget about using the crock pot for breakfast as well. Oatmeal, for instance, is great in the CP, but not your cheap instant stuff. Start with some steel cut oats, cut up some apples, add some raisins, some cinnamon, and other things like dried cranberries (use your imagination). Put all this in the CP at night (don't forget to add the water) and flip it on low before you hit the rack. When you wake up in the morning you'll smell all that goodness coming from the CP. Dish it up, add some walnuts and a little maple syrup (or honey), some cream (if you wish) and serve.

Tasty. . .

For the tailgater tomorrow I am throwing a bunch of pork in the crock tonight with a little bbq sauce. Shred it up in the morning for pulled pork sandwiches. I would prefer to smoke the pork, but I don't have the time....plus not sure I want to waste the "good" smoked pork on a bunch of drunk football fans.....they will eat anything! hahaha

You know I will.....I hate night games though. WAY too much time for the students to be drinking before the game (no... the fans not the players) always gets ugly! Haha

82: I've done that several times. Comes out great. Plus it makes the house smell awesome!

I use the crock pot several times a month, more in the winter.

German red cabbage is great in there. German roladen (sp) also.

I cook whole chickens in it too and shred it for stews, chicken tacos stuff like that as well.

K, I've been drinking since like 2 (sister in law had a baby shower today and my brother in laws and I skipped out to a bar) but I'll try to give the recipe. I have no real measurements cause this is off the top of my head.

Red Cabbage, I prefer cut thicker slaw style
Piece of salt pork, not so big, rinsed off well (Optional, but pork, c'mon!)
Red wine vinegar, couple tablespoons
1 or 2 Granny Smith Apples sliced thin. (Number of apples depends on how big your crock pot is and how much cabbage you can fit in it)
Brown Sugar
Freshly ground black pepper
Kosher Salt (Amount depends on whether or not you use the salt pork)
Optional: Freshly ground nutmeg

And I think that's about it.

Cook it on low for 6-8 hours and damn if it isn't good and it makes the house and neighborhood smell great if your windows are open.

I've done this for company several times.

Cold tofu with finely chopped green onions, wasabi and shoyu is another way to eat it. Or sometimes grated ginger instead of the wasabi.

Could also cut soft tofu into small blocks and add it to miso soup.
