I have an upright freezer from the
1960’s (maybe 5 feet tall and 3.5
feet wide) and am going to turn it
into a long term storage humidor. I
have searched and think I have everything
covered, but would like the groups
collective knowledge on this subject.
Here are a few questions;

Do I need to remove the compressor
from the freezer?

Can you put closed boxes in long
term storage or should they be open
for better air circulation?

Will a cigar oasis be a good
humidification device?

I plan on opening the ice box 2-3 times
a week for air circulation, will this
be adequate?

Spanish cedar boxes vs. Spanish cedar lining?

Thanks for the help.

Any links to ideas or examples would be
welcome and my email is:

Thanks for the help.

Well sounds like you have a beast there...

1. Does it work? If it does, use it.Compressor and all.
2. Buy a Johnson Controller from an online brewing company.(The info on these you'll get from 3)
3. Search the picture section for Fridgeidor,Freezerdor
and Wine Cooler to get pictures of mine...

From all the info in those posts you should be set.
Have fun with it. And Good Luck.

I have done more reading and research and have another question:

When the compressor kicks on to lower or raise the temperature the RH will drop. Can anyone tell me if this has been a problem for them or does it readjust quickly enough to not even matter? Thanks in advance.

Havn't really had any problems with it... I'd love to hook a sensor up to a computer and plot the actual swing. But I don't know how to do that nor do I have the money to find out. All I know is it hasn't been any kind of detriment. I put some spannish cedar shelves in mine and I'm sure that helps stabilize it no matter the temp. It absorbs the water and I can't believe that it would leech it all out do to the temp. And besides, its a sealed fridge. Not that much leaks out. Good luck with it.

My fridgadoor rests in a room at about 80 degrees all summer. With the johnson controller, it kicks on quite often to maintain my set temp of 68-70. The RH will drop only while it runs, now beings it runs a few times an hours, RH will go as low as 40, but only for a moment. Within minutes, my RH climbs to 70-74 with the addition of plenty of spanish cedar and a pound of 65% climmax meadia beads. Plenty of moister will build up inside the more it runs. But, this is only true if you use the johnson controller, it will shut of the fridge before the defrost cycle comes on. So actually, high humidity is your concern, but climmax beads will combat this.
