After 27 years of playing hard (competitive) soccer, 18 years of martial arts, and lots of weight lifting and running in between, I blew my knee out today refereeing (been at this for 9 years now. It was a girls U-19 game and I was on the line with 5 minutes left in the game. I turned to sprint down the line and after about 10 yards my knee went snap and down I went in a heap. I laid there for a moment got up and thought "oh this isn't bad at all", then I went down again. The worst injury I have had to date is a dislocated thumb. The on-site trainer said it is probably either an ACL injury or a fractured knee cap, they can't tell until the swelling goes down apparently. Wonderful stuff I tell you. It blows me away some of the hits I have taken and I do my knee on a sprint for crying out load!!!! I was told I am now officially old, I call crap!!!!

Now I am going to go have a drink (Dr's orders).

Cheers,
Castlewa

For me it was football, soccer, rugby, skiing, track, weights with never a knee issue.

Then my 60lb golden blind sides me while playing with the STD Poodle and I end up needing knee surgery. Such is life LOL

Ahhh yessssssss. How I miss my ACL's now that they are both gone. And both times it was doing something non-strenuous
Did they hear the "POP" on the sidelines

Well now that I have talked to other people that were there I have the whole story. I was on the field we call the "fishbowl" because it is closest field to the referee room. When referees are between games they rest and watch the game on that field. So I go down and a woman yells "he's had a heart attack!". I look up as I am on my back and the parent sitting there says "are you ok?" I said I am not sure. I heard the "pop" but not sure he did. Now I know why the trainer was there so fast. I did get up pretty quick, but went back down. Going to the doc today to see what is up.

Really sorry to hear it. I know where you're coming from, I've had four knee operations in the past few years. I too played soccer for about 13 years and I really feel this contributed to the problem now (all of my friends who also played as much as I did also have similar knee problems). You never appreciate how much your knees do for you until they stop working!

Good luck with it, really.

Lets see...i played footbal for many years...and baseball for at least 20...no injuries...a couple of scrapes here and there...but nothing broken...so then i take up Paintball and i break my leg and tear the ligaments in my ankle...get screwed (three screws to be exact) and am left with a nice scar...

Good luck...

Thanks guys for the support. It is really nothing I should complain about. I just wish I could say I did it sparring or actually playing soccer. I just keep laughing at myself.

Played football, lifted weights, had no problem. Pushing a car out of the mud at age 37, pushing up and forward, got a little bit of an angle to my leg and blew my left knee to pieces. Felt like a stick of dynamite went off behind my kneecap. You have my sympathy.

Castlewa: Lets hope it's non surgical...either way...doctors are real good at knees...you shouldn't be down for too long. At least you'll have an excuse to thin out your humidor.

I had a month off earlier in the year. Now I tore a tendon in my elbow...looking at some more time off if they have to go in. Wish my injury was nearly as cool a circumstance as yours. (I was installing ceiling fans in my house).

Anyway...hope you get better soon.

Hey castlewa,
Sorry to hear of your knee troubles. Good luck on your rehab. It isn't impossible to bounce back, it just takes a little longer. An injury that used to take us 6 weeks to recover from, may take 6 months. Just tkae it slow, and follow the physical therapist advice, and you should fair ok. I am assuming surgury is coming right??
Hope you are back on the field soon.

my knees have never been diagnosed as bad, but they never have been that hot. I've met several sailors in Limdu status awaiting the results of medical review boards to ascertain whether they would be retained, medically discharged or retired because of the cumulative effects of years of walking steel decks. It seems that's worse that walking on concrete all day, and for six months at a time, you never set foot off steel decks except for a few hours at a time every few weeks. My sympathies! You ought to try being 45 in a profession where mast guys are retiring in their late thirties, or early forties! I hve to wait until I'm 53! LOL

Thank guys. Went to the doctor yesterday and he is feeling around my knee and says "well one is different from the other". I was LMAO until he said "yep its your acl, lets hope it is only a sprain. Here is your appt for an MRI". That stopped my laughing and quick.

I have a desk job CW if I had to walk steel decks that often I would have been retired at 35, it was my good knee that I hurt.

from past experience with both my ACL's, if you heard a very loud "POP" i'm willing to bet that its severed or torn badly....just the thing you'd like to hear right...I am sorry that it happened though...like some one else said...MAKE SURE TO DO EVEYTHING the physical therepist says, surgery or no surgery...Get better any way.

I received the results of my MRI yesterday and I did not blow my ACL! I did tear my medial and lateral meniscus and that will require surgery. Now I have to wait until my appt. in two weeks, then wait I don't know how long to have the surgery. These knee guys are busy! Anyone here tear a meniscus, what is the surgery like, and recovery time?

Thanks,
Castlewa

Out patient surgery. I have had 4. Within a week you will be walking almost normal and within a month, good as new provided that you follow doctors orders.

Check for torn meniscus, too. Only go for the "scope" if there is no other more coservative Tx. Once scoped, you will almost surely have thining joint spacing and a definite risk of Rhumetoid Arthritis.

Remember, nothing beats OEM parts.

I should have read down further. The surgery is fairly fast and easy. You will be walking that day, you just won't be real happy about it. Beats the old days when they laid the thing open by a foot long incision.

It gets better fast. And you should never squat or get on your knees ever again. Of course you will, but minimize it. If they offer the choice of general Anesthesia vs spine tap. Take the general. I watched my last scope with the doc(looked like mowing a lawn as he abrided). Was paraplegic for an hour after.:( The general, you're just out. Having tried them both, I recommend the general, YMMV.
