I saw a story on MSN in which they listed "Bull Durham", "61", and "The Natural" as being the best baseball movies of all time ... some other notables mentioned were "Major League", "The Stratton Story", "Bad News Bears", "Bang the Drum Slowly", "Eight Men Out", "Field of Dreams" and "A League of Their Own"

Among those cited as being the worst were "Pride of the Yankees", "For Love of the Game" and "The Babe Ruth Story"

The Babe Ruth movie is not only my personal favorite as the worst baseball movie of all time, I think it's among the worst movies of any kind of all time ...

Conspicuously missing from the "best" list, IMO, is one of my favorites ... "Long Gone", a made for HBO film ...

I'm looking forward to Charlie's input on this since, like me, he's both a baseball fan and a movie nut

I think my all-time favorite has to be "Cobb"

Oh, and "The Sandlot" was an entertaining movie when I was younger.

Top 5:
Long Gone
Field of Dreams
The Natural
Major League
Bull Durham

LOL SteveS, "The Babe Ruth movie is not only my personal favorite as the worst baseball movie of all time, I think it's among the worst movies of any kind of all time"

Yeah, but how many times have you watched it? How about The Pride of St. Louis, Dan Dailey as Dizzy Dean. Very hokey, but it's one of those movies I'm drawn to whenever it's on the tube. I just can't help myself.

One of the funnier ones from the late 40's or early 50's, It happens every Spring. Ray Milland plays a college professor that discovers a substance that repels wood and then leads St. Louis to the World Series.

My top 5:

1- Field of Dreams

"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. Its been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But, baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and could be again.

2T- Bull Durham
2T- The Natural
4- Major League
5- Eight Men Out

Honorable mention goes to The Stratton Story. Pretty sappy but Love James Stewart and a very corageuos story.

Does anyone remember an odd movie about a neurotic Washington Senator's ball player called Jimmy Pearsall? There was a scene where he climbs the backstop & has a breakdown.

I think that he was played by Anthony Perkins- he stabbed Janet Leigh in the shower scene (Psycho). Come to think of it, he's played a lot of nuts.

I love Pride of the Yankees! What about Reagan as Grover Cleveland Alexander in a movie that the title escapes me.

As an ex-minor leaguer I can tell you that Bull Durham is not too far off. But my fav's are:

The Natural
Major League
61
Pride of the Yankees
Bang the Drum Slowly

Worst:
Major League II

Ramon, you are correct that Perkins played Piersall. The movie was called "Fear strikes out". It is actually a very compelling story and well worth the read.

DRJ,

I disagree.

I think the worst was Major League 3- Back to the Minors.

I like the hokey old movies, The Babe Ruth Story, The Pride of the Yankees and St. Louis, and I don't think anyone has mentioned Angels In the Outfield,(the original, not the re-make). I will say that Ray Milland in It Happens Every Spring had the absolute worst looking arm I've ever seen.

Shhhhhh, Dave, err I mean DrJothen. On these boards, I'm not 4'11" (92lbs)- I am bloody spaniard, shhhhh or I will lose respect.

Yeah, Tony Perkins is an odd one.

*Yeah, that substance was called Roseann Arnold.

Speaking of Roseann, anyone see "The Babe" with her tub 'o lard tv hubby- ol' what's his name?

Yeah, that was a compelling movie about Jimmy Piersall who played for the Red Sox AND the Senators (1961-63) among other teams.

Great thread!

Top 5:

1. Bang the Drum Slowly - it's about baseball, but it's not about baseball.

2. Bull Durham.

3. Field of Dreams.

4. Long Gone. Stud Cantrelle's rules always make for great conversation.

5. Tie - The Scout and The Rookie.

Bottom 5:

1. Anything named "Bad News Bears."
2. Babe Ruth story - poor John Goodman.
3. For Love of the Game - sappy, sappy and sappy.
4. Tie - Major League (I,II and III).
5. Another tie, Kill the Umpire, Angels in the Outfield (old and new versions).

And there are lots of other bad ones - Summer Catch is just one that comes to mind. On the good side, there's Eight Men Out, The Natural and Fear Strikes Out.

What do you guys think of the new series, "Clubhouse?"

Steve

Great thread, sorry, been involved in some heavy work projects since Wed! This is all a matter of taste and I tend to be one of the world's great baseball fanatics, so I will give a go based on my favorites:

Sports Illustrated picked Bull Durham as the number one baseball movie of all time, I think it is top group, but I would nominate Billy Crystal's pet project number one:

1. 61, great movie and factual!
2. Field of Dreams, even chicks like this flick!
3. The Natural, a feel good flick
4. Eight Men Out
5. Bull Durham

Worst:
1. Babe Ruth played by John Goodman
2. Fear Strikes Out, ever notice how Tony Perkins throws the ball in this mess of a movie!?!?!
3. Major League, Back to the Minors (I believe this is part III, Major League was good, but the sequals sucked~!!!!!
4. Angels in the Outfield......remake!
5. A whole bunch of bad movies can go here
Special Mention on worsts: "The Scout", "It Happens Ever Spring", "Pastime", etc

Note: I liked "For Love of the Game" (a watchable chick flick-my wife loves it), liked the Lou Gehrig movie with Gary Cooper, loved "Long Gone", and would like to see a movie about the old Negro Leagues that would prove to be half way factual!

A movie dying to be made would be one based on the life of Buck O'Neil, the great first baseman and manager of the Kansas City Monarchs, who was the first black to made a major league coach with the Chicago Cubs! He is head of the Negro Leagues Hall of Fame in Kansas City and one of the finest gentlemen you can ever meet!

He used to call him Nancy. Seems Satch used to like the ladies and one day his wife showed up unexpectedly at the motel room Satch was staying at. When she knocked,Satch said "Is that you Nancy?" When his wife asked him WTH Nancy was,he said that was the name he called Buck. After that incident, the name stuck. X
