8track,

Re# 1

Funny but not accurate. Actually really funny.

Disco is very offensive I think it should be removed from your user name. It promotes a drug sub-culture that has turned poor innocent ghetto children into crack heads. They would never have done that if "Disco" wasn't born.

Your definition's are a little slanted. I have been called both of those names for the better of 20 years (lived in Puerto Rico from 1989 - 1991, and married to a Puerto Rican since 1990). I am proud to be called either "gringo" or "cocolo".

I often have to explain to hispanics that I am actually a gringo - because I speak spanish with a very strong puerto rican accent, and they just don't believe I am white. They think I am a fair skinned puerto rican.

I have been called "cocolo" for years because of the passion I have for salsa music (I didn't come up with it). It is the equivilent of the term "rocker" that was used in the late 80's and early 90's, meaning a person that is a pure salsa listner (like a salsa singing Jose Dirt).

The term "cocolo" as a derogatory word went out about the same time as americans (both black and white) stopped using the word "colored" for african americans. I am sure some cultures still occasionaly use it in a derogatory manner.

I have never had any person become offended by either of those terms, with about 20 years of use across all cultures.

There is also a very different meaning of slang and slur, although some slang can also be slurs.

I will continue to ask for deletion of any thread that contains any racial slur or disparages an entire race or religion. The origional thread had several. If you didn't read it, then you have no idea what it said.

"Some examples of unreasonable messages may include the use of profanity, advertising or commercial purposes, competing web sites, or disparaging an individual, a race or religion, a company, or website."

#57 - Interesting.... It's kind of funny to see what some people get offended by and what they try to justify to themselves as not offensive. Your post is a prime example.

So it's okay for you to use and justify present/formerly offensive words yet you are quick to stop something that offends you. . .

This is truly the pot calling the kettle black. . . (no, the term "black" wasn't used as a racial reference here - I was merely pointing out the differences in color of a cooking utensil...)

#64 - My point was merely that an offensive or racial slur is just that - offensive. Who, among us, gets to decide what is acceptable and what isn't acceptable? Many of the racial slurs banned today were very acceptable and commonly used at one time or another. People used them freely and it was accepted by society as a whole.

We can apply the same logic to curse words. To some religious people any curse word is offensive. Yet, the sensors on TV have now decided that "bitch" "slut" "whore" "balls" and countless other words are now "acceptable" to be heard on TV by our children. Why? I here the N word bleeped on Richard Prior movies shown on TV and comics on Comedy Central, yet they are allowed to say "honky" without it being bleeped. What gives?

Robert - I wasn't looking for an argument or trying to start a fight. I was just pointing out that individual people have determined (within themselves) what is offensive and what isn't. They use terms that were once offensive but are quick to raise the flag if someone offends them.

I find it very interesing where the U.S. has gone with regards to PC and what is acceptable or deemed unacceptable.

Chiefburg,

Tell me one time in history where the "N" word has been acceptable, post slavery.

Tell me when the "S" word (slur term for hispanics) has been acceptable.

Those were the words among others, that were used in the origional thread. Not words that "might" cause disagreement.

I agree with your point of times changing and uses changing for many words.

8trackdisco, was just trying to start some ****. Whatever, if he gets his definitions from Wikipedia and chooses only to post the parts that incite, so be it. It is a feeble attempt to gather some sort of a mob, or a twisted sense of humor. I don't know, I don't care, I fear neither one.

Again, I am no saint. I just happen to actually have a set and will speak up when I think something is wrong.

If you think the post was appropriate, then bitch at SteveR for deleting the thread. I didn't delete it. I am sure a company like CBid or CI really want's a bunch of hate speach posted on it's "Cigar Forum".

P.S. For all of you who never read the origional thread, you have no idea what you are talking about.

The time in history that it is acceptable seems to be now.
I here it quite often in Baltimore city. It seems to be a form of greeting used quit freely among certain people.

Are you defending it's use?

Just curious.

It's the same thing, wrong. I don't care if it black people call each other that. If you poll the MAJORITY of black people will say it's unacceptable, even by members of their own race.

#70 - The point being, the N word was acceptable in the U.S. for a long, long, time. I'm sure your parents or grandparents probably used it without even thinking (I'm not suggesting they were racist - I'm just saying it was a word that was used without thought). I learned the word from my friends when I was a kid and I had no idea (for the longest time) that it was bad. I used it out of ignorance, not hate. When it was explained to me just what it meant, I ceased using it and don't condone its used.

Post slavery? Well, as stated above, I hear it all the time in certain circles. I hear it in music and I hear it in the movies. It's on comedy CD's and in comedy clubs. I'm sure it's quite acceptable amongst White Supremists and those that hate just to hate. So, it's "acceptable" to them.

For that matter, ANY word used hatefully (to include bitch, slut, whore, azzhole, f*cker, whitey, etc) is wrong. What it boils down to is the context and meaning in which it is used. I see no problems using the words when we are discussing their use in an adult fashion. I think it's one way where we can overcome biases and work towards understanding how it hurts or affects others.

A double standard exists in this country and I think the OP (of the banned thread) was making that connection out of agrevation. I've often felt the same way. If a word is wrong, it's wrong and nothing or nobody can make it right. If you can have Black Power, you should be able to have Brown Power and Red Power, Green Power, and White Power.

I do recall a time when Gringo wasn't a good name to be called. It was used as a slur and it's connotations weren't good by the group using it. In fact, they meant it in a derogatory fashion and it was specifically used to hurt - nothing more. And, no, I don't expect or want you to change your name nor should you. I'm not offended. I understand the context in which you are using it and I'm positive you are not using it out of hate.

So, I go back to my original point. People, themselves, have decided what is acceptable and what isn't. TV sensors have decided (for me) what my kids can hear and what they can't hear. Societal rules are changing, and not for the better in some cases.

As usual, I'm not looking for a fight or to get banned. I'm expressing my freedom of speech guaranteed by our Constitution.

(P.S. - Before anyone labels me a racist - don't. I despise and detest those words and I don't think anyone should be able to use them in a hurtful fashion. I despise racists and I can't believe they are so shortsided to think they are any better than anyone else. I fully believe we were all created equal and we should respect everyone. I don't see color, race, religion, etc, I see humans.)

Charlie,

I am not saying that the word can never be used. The context in posts of the origional thread, was clearly going to take the thread to the gutter (I think it was there already).

The only reason I am not using the word and saying "N" word, is because I know how the azzhats would jump on that. Wouldn't just be the normal offenders either.

As far as Mrs18Delta, I didn't even think she was talking about me. I think what she said is funny, I ain't no **** - thats gross, and I don't whine. I actually don't even think **** is a very offensive word anymore. Back to the same ideas.

So the boots are Ole Gringo or are you just an Ole Gringo wearing boots?
