What are your thoughts on shops imposing a limit on the amount of sticks you can buy? ie.. Opus X.

Personally, I don't buy them. Too overrated/priced IMHO. But that aside, I guess I'm split on shop owners telling you, you can buy only 1-2 or whatever.
Don't get me wrong. I understand why, but what do you think? I say a sale is a sale. If a guy wants to buy 3 boxes, go ahead! Hell I'd probably throw in a few freebies.

For a long time I bought cigars at the local beer stop. (Cigars were displayed in a nice glass humidor behind checkout.) They didn't care how many you bought because rarely did the same cigar appear on their shelves twice. The only reasons I see a retailer limiting the number you can buy is: 1) hype the cigar's scarcity, 2) he smokes them himself, 3) he figures prices are going up and he can get more later for the product he has now, 4) he's getting a kinky Clintonist attachment to them, 5) he's got some committed to good customer and you're a lousy customer, or 6) his cash register only handles sales under a $1,000. Solutions: Try a wig and mustache disguise. Get your wife or buddies to buy the extra sticks you want. Buy one a day instead of one a week. Look elsewhere for product. Good luck with your retail adventures...

Opus X are really great cigars, but greatly overpriced!!! A lot of this is "snob appeal" and I will continue to smoke Padrons, Excaliburs and La Gloria Cubanas when I want a really great cigar! Charlie

Personally, I think its a load of B.S. for the shop to limit the purchases.... but, I do understand why they do it. Rather than be "limited" by the availability of an Opus...... I'll smoke something else.

Never had an Opus, probably never will...Hell, regular Fuente's are over priced, IMHO. However, I do smoke a couple a year, that's all my wallet can handle.

at least you guys have the option of getting Opus X locally. technically, we cant even get them here west of the mississippi river. we are lucky enough to be able to buy the diamond crown dog rockets instead. or you can buy them from a dealer who bought a box from another dealer and is now charging 50-60 bucks apiece for them (as was the case on my last trip to las vegas. at Bally's they had them at 60 dollars for the double coronas). I would smile happily as I forked over fifteen bucks for one of these.

I agree with Charlie on the Padron, Excalibur, and LGC, but I do like to collect a few of the "unattainable". I don't think I'll ever be able to afford a box of the Opus anyway so being limited to a couple per vist doesn't really bother me. I like to age my cigars and so far I still have 15 of the 20 Opus that I have ever bought. Barry

Many ultra premium cigars are made in extremely limited numbers, simply because of the special blends and aging of the tobaccos it takes to make them. Only the most talented rollers (artisans) are used to make these cigars.

Therefore, you can see that would limit the supply, as they ship worldwide. It is common practice, and all they are doing is making sure one person doesn't buy up whole shipment going out to a particular area. And believe me, there are those who would. It may be many months, or even years before another shipment gets to that particular area.

Ultra-premiums will always demand a price higher than MSRP. They are entitled to make a little more off them, but the Fuentes do frown upon, and will even revoke their 'licence' to sell Fuente products, if they are caught gouging the customer.

C'mon. Fuentes doesn't start with "F U" for nothing...

Limiting the supply also prevents some "independent broker" from buying the whole shipment and selling them at even higher prices! John

I believe a pretty high % of the MSRP on "super premiums" is going towards the expense of the marketing, advertising, boxing, bands etc....none of which I smoke. After all, who determines these enticing claims("hand picked", "special aged" etc.) about there products? Don't get me wrong, I think Fuente makes a good product...but so do MANY others without the limitations and prices. QC or marketing ploys to keep priced up....you determine.

some good examples: Graycliff (22 bucks apiece), Diamond Crown (18 bucks for a glorified Macanudo).

However, not all are overpriced, for example the Partagas Serie D No. 4 is about 45 dollars Canadian, and is worth every penny!

As George Burns said, you have to be crazy to pay more than a dollar for a cigar.

I'm not really sure but I believe that West of the Mississippi rule no longer applie to OPUS, I definitely live WOTM and our local store has Opus all the time. They got a shipment in yesterday. The limit is 2 a day. There are definitely reasons they do this such as making sure all their customers that want one will have availibility to it. Instead of one or 2 people buying up the whole stock. Fortunately the cigar store is on my way home and stopping 2 or 3 times a week is not a problem, ORV

One thing I don't understand is any day of the week I can purchase about any size and wrapper of Padron Anniversary's. The Opus X are never readily available yet on average the Padrons cost $4.00 to $5.00 more per similar size stick.
