Well i live about a 5 minute drive from Wisconsin border...maybe i'll cross and light something on fire and go back home (not feeling very rioty today)...

Had to add this on the edit:

A group of Wisconsin Democrats blocked passage of a sweeping anti-union bill today by ignoring orders to attend a vote. They left the state to force Republicans to negotiate over the proposal. Aides said they did not know where any of them had gone.

That is headline on Chicago Tribune...maybe i might just go riot...

I went to college in Madison. It's known as the Berkley of the Midwest. The environment there revolves around the UW first and the Capital of WI second. As such they have a protest every couple of months for one reason or another.

My favorite protests were...

1) Women protesting that they are not allowed to hang out on the beach topless like men - a topless march to the capitol building. It all hung out and the cops only arrested you if you got out of control. I casually watched in support.

2) Hemp fest - a yearly march to the capitol protesting mary jane laws. Smoke filled the air and the cops only arrested you if you got out of control . I casually watched in support.

3) Threeks vs Forks - not a march more of a organized protest. The school cafeterias switched to a three pronged fork and the students protested by stealing or throwing away all the "threeks." The school had to give in as their silverware supply diminished so they went back to forks.

It was a great place to go to college. Ever read The Onion? It was born in Madison.

Maybe they can ship some French Canadians down. The French, after all, have a history of building impenetrable walls.

Didn't a group of Democratic legislators in Texas do that stunt within the last couple of years? SOmething about re-districting, I think.

Re: Hempfest

I don't know if they still do it but we, ummm... they would start with "speeches" near Memorial Union in the morning then march down State St. and have more "speeches" at the Capital lawn. It was an all day fun event.

1,000's of folks wanting to change the hemp laws because, as you know, it's the world's premier food source. (Yeah, a bunch of left over hippies and college stoners will really organize effectively enough to become a powerful P.A.C.) But hey, it was fun.

I bet I have some great memories somewhere in some long lost brain cells.

This a almost a wet dream for me. Watching these overly pampered lefties getting their ashes handed to them after 8 years of a liberal Gov trying everything from free college and Drivers Licenses to illegals to successfully implementing a smoking ban.

The annual Miflin Street was another bizarre scene.

This attractive chick walked up to me and said "If I showed you me t i t s, would you look at them?"

"She showed them to me for about 10 seconds, said "thanks" and floated on down the street.whip

When I was there, they city refused to grant permits for the block party in attempts to stop it. Yep, that really kept the masses at bay.

I almost got fined year. The cop said that open container in public was illegal (ummm... dude, look around you). He made me pound my beer and throw away the can before I could cross the street.

Whatever, Burp…

President Obama has accused Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a Republican, of unleashing "an assault" on unions by pressing legislation that would end collective bargaining rights for public employees and sharply increase their health care and pension payments.

"Some of what I've heard coming out of Wisconsin, where you're just making it harder for public employees to collectively bargain generally seems like more of an assault on unions," Obama told WTMJ-TV in a White House interview Wednesday. "And I think it's very important for us to understand that public employees, they're our neighbors, they're our friends."

"I think everybody's got to make some adjustments, but I think it's also important to recognize that public employees make enormous contributions to our states and our citizens," he continued.

But Walker said the demands on public employees are "modest" compared with those in the private sector, and are meant to prevent a shutdown, which could result in 6,000 state workers not getting paid.

"We're at a point of crisis," the governor said, adding that he would call out the National Guard if needed to keep state operations, including prisons, running......

"Immunity from Arrest.

The framers of the U.S. Constitution recognized the fundamental necessity of protecting members of Congress from arbitrary arrest. While U.S. Constitution Article I, section 6 placed some restrictions on the police or justice to arrest or detain legislators during a legislative session, its protections did not apply to situations involving "treason, felony or breach of the peace." Most state constitutions contain similar provisions."

To me, this basically means that legislators can't be arrested (or detained) as a political tool to prevent them from doing thier work. Here, however, they have "arrested themselves" as a political to to keep from having to their work.

Any one else see the irony?

1. Obama should keep the F*ck out of the states business. Isn't there some pressing issues at the federal level? Like our budget?

2. unions suck.

3. public unions suck even worse.

They are making a bunch of cuts here in MI too. Mostly to K-12 education. I was listening to the WI story on the way home from work, and I got to thinking....if these states really need to cut something, why not cut welfare and other state social programs? I haven't so much as heard it mentioned. All they wanna do is cut state employees' pay/benefits and cut funding for education. WTF?

If they keep cutting education, we will end up with a bunch of blundering dunderheads...who will end up on welfare.

^ then you are falling for lib sales pitch. By that I mean look at the cost of education (separating actual dollars in classroom and pay/benefits). Many states (one of the worst here in Oregon) with the cost of health/retirement costs, and they are way outta wack with the private sector. Common argument here is "we sacrifice pay for bennies". Well ok, their median base pay is within 1K of average but bennies are 15-20k higher. Average in Oregon is like 32K they're around 55. Its just not "sustainable" to barrow terminology....Our incoming governor was the gov when the current collective bargaining contract was signed. Guaranteed 8% increase of retirement. Well that was in the middle of the Tech stock bubble. So ridiculous investment were made to try to cover that increase and now its going to run bankrupt soon. I have NO problem with them making a decent living. But it needs to be realistic, and there has to be recourse for getting rid of bad teachers.

It reminds me of the protests in London and Paris this year. Nobody likes it when their gravytrain comes to an end.

The answer is simple. Raise property taxes and state sales taxes. Problem solved.

Ironic ain't it?

Teachers union bitches about how changing things will hurt the quality of the kids' education... think of the kids! This isn't about me, it's about the kids! I'm so concerned about the kids and their education that I'll force them to close the schools so I can go protest about my pension.

Think of the kids!

Wisconsin Teachers Failing At Their Jobs

In the middle of our discussion about the union protests in Wisconsin, here’s a fact worth noting.

As of 2009, only 40% of Wisconsin 8th graders tested as being proficient in math (PDF).

And their teachers are complaining about being required to do something we all do, contribute a portion of their health care premiums.

Strikes me that they should be counting themselves lucky to even have a job considering how badly they seem to be doing it.

The test questions are culturally biased.

They should try something like:

Billy has 6 blocks of cheddar. Susan has 10 blocks of swiss. Added together, how many blocks of cheese do they have?

In 2004 against the Vikings, Brett Favre threw for 224 yds and 2 TDs in the first half and 176 yds and 1 TD in the second half. How many interceptions did Brett throw in that game?

There is a provision in the state constitution that says state troopers can force them in if the governor calls for it.

That is just the start of the cuts. The rest come later.

The "under-served populations" need to continue to be medicated. If they don't get their 10 pound blocks of Sconnie cheese, and cigarettes, we will have riots.

They are going to cut funding to Wisconsin Public Radio. With their programing being 80% Liberal, how di you think they are covering this story?
