It makes me sick to hear here voice. The TV show she has where she is a "judge" is a joke.
Here evening show often involves very bright and experienced experts and lawyers, but she doesn't even give them a chance to explain their positions/arguments before berating them. News value? Some, but not much at all. I hate her with a passion.

I absolutely despise her, and I am not necessarily political in nature. Gives the profession a bad name. Embarrassing, especially the callers who fawn over her. She is master of the obvious..... A jury would instantly hate her. Rant over. Sorry about that.....

That was not a rant. It was the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth!

This will be my 2000 post.

She makes my skin crawl. Condescending, disrespectful and simply rude. No redeeming value to her show. It is cotton candy. Repulsive. Well Robert, you hit one of my triggers. Goes back to when she had Jon benet's parents convicted and hung...... Never an apology, and there have been many similar examples since. Can't recall whether her coverage of the oj trial pissed me off. Perhaps that was before her time........ If I tried a case against her, I would pray that she brought her vitriolic, condescending demeanor into the courtroom. Would not last long....

No...it eats your time

It eats your mind

It pollutes your soul

It creates a hole...

A hole where a soul should be.

Unless you're buying soup or a car.

She certainly didn't help out, except to inflame the situation and unfairly destroy Aruba's credibility as a safe vacation spot. Not that I am admitting to anything, but I was vacationing there when Holloway went missing. During one subsequent visit, I played in a poker tournament, where Van der Sloot was seated directly across from me, no more than three feet away. Creepy...

I don't care for her at all. She should be relegated to playing a witch in a Halloween spook house.

If you want to see an outstanding, extremely effective, very classic: "failed to prove beyond any reasonable doubt"; someone else-may-have -done-it; their witnesses are all liar's; closing statement, you need to turn this on right now!

Both myself and several other lawyers on Central Florida Trial Lawyers' Association list-serve (some of whom were long assistant state attorneys and criminal attorneys) think he is doing very well. A tad long, but still very well. Let's see if its good enough to save her life- wanna bet it does?

So you think she will be declared totally innocent or just not get the death penalty?

I'm not a betting man, even if I was betting on what a jury would be about my last choice.

This is going late. Defense is arguing for lesser included offenses. Prosecutor still has almost 3.5 hours left on the clock. If he cuts it short to just two more hours, it will still be night time and dark outside.

Based on everything I saw and heard from the televised broadcast of the proceedings, I would have to (unfortunately) find her not-guilty under the law, except for the four charges for lying to law enforcement.

I watched almost all of the closing arguments. First, you have to understand, trying a small case is a tremendous undertaking, as I'm sure rfenst will agree. Trying a case like this is beyond exhausting. These lawyers have been, no doubt, putting in 15 to 18 hour days since 30 days before evidence started, with no days off. That is why you get so pissed off when you see opposing counsel laughing during your closing argument..... I thought the defense lawyers were absolutely excellent and very dedicated. I differ in what I think will result -- I think the prosecution gets some version of first degree.

Jim,

I am here in Orlando. Did an internship at the State Attorney's Office. Jeff Ashton is a DICKHEAD. Probably 2/3 of what he was accused of is true. Nobody here knows anything about Baez, except for this case. Baez' "supervisor" Cheney Mason, is a death-penalty certified "good old Boy", who gets results, but wasn't of any real help in this case. Sad thing is that if Cassey hired one of the real "guns" in town, we would have seen a brilliant trial.

Trial is among the most exhausting legal work. Just sitting there and paying attention will wipe anyone out. Then, as soon as the trial day is over, there are hours of work to do to prepare for the next day. If the lawyers on this case are getting more than five hours sleep per night, they are very lucky. Imagine what RX need to take or drink, just to fall asleep?

I just don't see a jury sending her to the chair or for an injection...

Too bad Judge Perry took this case.
Too bad the Bar Rules are so strict I could get in trouble for publicly criticizing him.

Robert: Great info!! There is no better info than local reputation. I imagine the FL Bar in your area is as incestuous as ours is here.... No offense -- and I know you aren't a prosecutor now -- but I have rarely come across a non-DICKHEAD prosecutor. When I saw him laughing during Baez's argument, I wanted to put my fist through the screen. I do civil, and have only tangential dealings with them. Didn't realize Baez was an unknown. That is very surprising, and I know what you mean re: going with the proven guns in the jurisdiction. In our Bar Association, some of the key death penalty qualified guys go for a week every year to Gerry Spence's Trial College that has a special seminar on death penalty defense. Same guys, over and over, and they are good. Noted that Cheney opened with an anecdote about Hartford, CT, which I enjoyed.

Perry is a hard ass and will be perceived by the public as a great judge. I saw nothing that distinguished him. He displayed no understanding of what the lawyers were going through. We call it black robe syndrome.....

No, but he plays a TV show lawyer on TV.

It's complicated, but lawyers can figure that stuff out, because they have a lot of book learnin' and stuff.

Maybe I didn't express it correctly: As far as most prosecutors go, he's a MAJOR ******. Whine, Whine Whine.
Smirk, Smirk, Smirk. Facial gestures galore. I saw nothing wrong with Baez calling him out on it and directing the jury's attention to Ashton. This is a death trial- not misdemeanor arraignment- where accuseds say the darnedest things...

Baez has been practicing for about 8 years now. No one understands how she ever got to him, with so many choices out there. Funny thing is that the parents' first lawyer, Mark Nejame, would have been a great pick by Cassey. He's a media savy/whore, who is very creative. Prosecutors don't want' to mess with him.

Rumor id that Judge Perry is about to retire. I see a book deal in his future.

Here is what concerns me the most. Every single lawyer commentator on TV has ridiculed Baez' strategy and how bad he messed up by making an Opening Statement when he did, let alone what he said about an accidental drowning. So too has Retired Judge Eaton who, despite his total lack of on-air personality, is the most knowledgeable death-penalty judge in Florida. How does she NOT get a re-trial due to ineffective counsel?

Lots of potentially improper, novel expert testimony, such as on "the odor of decomposition"...

Gotcha on Ashton; not surprising. Loved Baez calling him out. Baez has been practicing for 8 years??????? Holy sh*t! You're lucky to try a small civil case in that timeframe..... Extraordinary. That may explain the overpromising in closing argument, but I thought the fact the prosecution couldn't reference it mitiged the omission greatly. Maybe the deck was so stacked against her that the opening argument may benefit her... Nancy Grace thought (wrongly) that there could be no reference to the drowning, but there was plenty of evidence that could be argued on that point. Great info, Robert. BTW, surprised to see that your courthouse has 23 floors. Is that usual -- a converted office building? We don't have one more than 8 floors......

Hard ass? I disagree. He never had control of the attorneys. He should have done what he did yesterday weeks to months ago. Obviously, he can't throw Cassey's attorney, Baez, out. That would likely be an automatic reversal.

Judge Perry has been the Administrative Judge virtually his entire career on the bench. I think he only does things like adoptions and uncontested probate. He seems to covers here and there some day, for absent Judges whose dockets are not in trial. My last direct experience with him over 10 years ago, was an ex-parte hearing where a bunch of busy lawyers waited outside the hearing room for a good 10 minutes while he talked about his social life with an old friend.

On the other hand he has fulfilled one important role of the Administrative Judge: He acts quickly to put misbehaving judges on paid leave, before charges are even public, while they wait to get their Judicial Hearing- and then throwing them under the bus real fast.

It was just completed, brand new, about 10-15 years ago. Before then, we had several different downtown courthouse and the PD and Prosecutors where in separate buildings 2-3 blocks apart. Now, everything is located in the courthouse's plaza, which has two other tall office buildings. (Maybe that is why our filing fee is $400?) Where are you at?

CT, which means I go to courthouses in Hartford, Stamford, Middletown, Waterbury, New Haven, Bridgeport, Putnam, etc. Most cases I have are in Stamford, which is in Fairfield County -- right outside NYC; we call it the Gold Coast. That is about an hour from south of where I live. The Monday motion's calendar is called at 9:30 am, which means I leave my house at 6:45 am to get there in traffic......

The only complaint I have is the lack of food or water allowed. I've had granola bars confiscated many times. That aside, we have great courthouse in Stamford.

No, amazingly. CT has contracted with the institute for the seeing impaired to provide food in the Courthouses. You order from a limited menu and call out the price. These challenged folks there do an amazing job, but it doesn't work with the time constraints. The "cafeteria" is a 6 by 6 room and the selection is extremely limited (I'm a vegetarian). There is a Marshall sitting outsdide, and you cannot bring anything out. Usually, your opposing cousel is sitting a foot or two away if you go there......
