Foo Fighters cover a bunch of stuff and I haven't heard a bad one yet but one of my favorites of theirs is Jerry Rafferty's Baker Street. Saw them do cover songs both times I saw them and those were amazing...can't remember right now which ones they were...too early....

Also, you can't forget that most of the stuff Van Halen did was cover songs, one of the all-time great cover bands. Many of those were kickin'.

Dude, even Trent Reznor agrees. When he heard the recording, he made the comment that the song was no longer his. Googleable fact.

I found that Johnny Cash CD while cleaning out a trashed rental house. I don't know why it was there, the people living there were, uhm, more into rap. I brought it home, cleaned it up and started playing the CD. When it got to Hurt, I really liked the way he covered the song. The lyrics are haunting for Johnny Cash. It also hit home, my Father was alcoholic. I still wonder how that CD appeared in that pile of crap they left behind, but I am glad it was there.

Sometimes things just happen and others happen for a reason. That's why I'm so passionate about music, I can take a song and connect it to a memory or vice verses.

I was never a big fan of cover songs - at least not covers of songs that were good/great in the first place. Especially when they were just 'copies'.

Not always great and not always better than the originals, but I really like that Disturbed takes a stab at covering a lot of songs and not re-doing them. I was particularly entertained when Disturbed's singer said that they wanted to find a song written by one of the worst rock song-writers ever and see what they could do with it, when talking about Land of Confusion. FU Phil Collins....LOL

Marilyn Manson's another that does great cover work - not to recreate originals, but whole new looks at old stuff.

Never liked the Beatles, but I love Jeff Healy's While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

Who's version of Summertime Blues is far better than the original.

Urge Overkill's cover of Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon -- my opinion is prob influenced by how that song was transformed by Pulp Fiction, but f-it - I love it now

Dylan might have been a genius poet, but most covers of his stuff are far better than his versions; Watchtower (by almost anyone...except Mellencamp), Rage's Maggie's Farm (in fact, check out all of songs on Renegades, if you haven't), RHCP's Subterranean Homesick Blues, Byrds' Tamborine Man.....etc.

SRV is mentioned above doing Hendrix (by DMV- Voodoo Chile), but SRV's Little Wing is an even better example of taking Hendrix to a whole different dimension - still sends chills down my spine like Hendrix' version never quite did.

While discussing covers I seem compelled to say that Manfredd Mann is probably the very worst thing that ever happened to the whole world and concept of rock covers. Ever.

Some general comments from the above thread:

1. Van Halen is not primarily a covers band.
2. Is it really a "cover" if the song wasn't originally popular? I mean, did anybody know Paper Lace's version of Billy Don't be a Hero before Bo Donaldson put it on the charts? Or does Patti Smith's "Because the Night" count as a cover simply because Bruce wrote it?
3. This discussion truly begins and ends with Hendrix' All Along the Watchtower.
4. Manfred Mann is terrible, but their version of Blinded by the Light is refreshing and proves how a cover should be approached. The two versions are completely different.
5. What about "self covers"? New versions of old songs, like Claptons Layla. Does this count?
6. The local Martha's Vineyard radio station does a show called "Accoustics, Live, and Cover Tunes". It's my favorite radio program and if the format expanded to include music outside their light-rock roots then it would be the best radio program.

Ever.

Great thread Scooter.

Some of my favorite more obscure ones:
Seether's version of Careless Whisper.
Ann Wilson's version of Isolation.

Best of all time (see #3 above). Other notables:
Janis Joplin: Bobby McGee
Otis: Try a Little Tenderness
The Who: Summertime Blues
Joe Cocker: With a little help from my friends; Feelin Alright; Cry me a River; etc etc

I respectfully, but wholeheartedly disagree. Maybe because I loved Bruce's version prior to hearing the cover, but I found Manfred Mann's version of that song offensive enough to make me gag every time I ever heard it. Bile rises in my throat just thinking about it.

Greetings From Asbury Park is an incredible piece of art and MM spit on it, IMHO.

"Greetings" is one of Bruce's best.

But unlike you, I knew Manfred Manns Earth Bands version before I ever heard Springsteens. So we're coming in from different perspectives.
But whether you like it or hate it is not the point. The important thing is that Mann rearranged it to such a degree that it may as well be a completely different song altogether.

I like Alien Ant Farm's cover of MJ's "Smooth Criminal."
I like Queen Latifah's cover of Frankie Valli & The 4 Seasons "Can't Take my eyes off of you"
I also like Marilyn Manson's cover or Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams". He also redid "Personal Jesus", I think by Depeche Mode, but I didn't care for that one too much.

However, I'll have to disagree with the entire board on the Johnny Cash remake. It's kinda like the Limp Bizkit cover of George Michaels "Faith", straight up garbage. If you're not gonna add any of your own flair to the song, then STFU. What flair did Johnny Cash add to "Hurt?" IMO, none. I originally loved the song by NIN, but Cash kinda ruined it for me. Sure, if you think "flair" is old, slow, monotone, barely can push the words out of his old decrepid mouth, than I guess it's ok. Fine, so you can all understand the words now, is that all? He's on the verge of death in the video and adds nothing, absolutely nothing to the song. NIN made it good, Cash made it die.

seriously though. many of the most well known songs they recorded were covers. get over it. were they a great band? absolutely...at least while DLR was on board. and they rocked the hell out of the covers. lots of big name bands did that and still do but, for those of us from that era that I know - Van Halen was primarily a cover band. they had some great non-cover songs as well but covers was their thing more than most any band of that era.

There is this little boy piano prodigy named Greyson Chance that puts a good amount of his own edge on Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi."

One thing I've noticed is that alot of otherwise 1 hit wonders come out with their second release being a cover song. The 2nd release also makes the charts, but they are never heard from again after that. It's like, ok you had 1 good original song and now you're already copying somebody else? Why don't you just get out now. Example: Ugly Kid Joe (1st song Everything About You, 2nd song Cat's in the Cradle, now GTFO) There are several others like this that I still consider 1 hit wonders. A lame rip off does not qualify you as having multiple hits.

The sad part is, you can be in a small time, local bar cover band and be more famous than the most famous orchestra/symphony conductor in the world. Don't believe me? Name three symphony conductors other than Arthur Fiedler. Most people, myself included, can't. Ask someone to name a local cover band and you'll get plenty of replies. Sad really.

The transcendent nature of music is such that periodically we form an emotional attachment to a certain song/performance. It doesn't matter if the version is a cover or an original, to that person, the song is exactly the way it should be and most attempts to redo it will be an affront. Part of this is because it encroaches upon our emotions that the song evokes when we hear it.

This is especially true with negatively emotional charged pieces. A silly/happy song about surfing/sunshine doesn't connect with people on the same level that a depressing song about death/loss sometimes does.

Also, if you despise a genre of music, you're going to really despise a cover going over to that genre. Someone who hates hip-hop but loves Led Zeppelin is going to have their ears bleed when they hear Bonham's drums replaced by a cheesy loop and Page's guitar replaced by two turntables.

This is why it is completely legitimate for someone like Tobacconation to actually be upset at a remake of "Hurt" because he clearly has a connection to the NIN version. (or he simply hates Cash's music)

On the other hand, I never thought much of the song "Hurt" until I heard Cash's version. It made me appreciate the song much more and for me, it became the de facto version.

So, it sounds like you don't like the Foos anyhow, Nicar (to me that's like saying you don't like Led Zeppelin - completely beyond comprehension). If that's the case though it's no surprise you don't like their covers.

Glad you gave them a real chance though, certainly one verse of one song tells it all....Sarcasm

I really don't have anything against Cash or country music. I like Ring of Fire which was his biggest hit, but I never really got I Walk the Line. Boy named Sue was pretty lame. The thing that gets me is that Cash hadn't been heard from in years and then he's gonna come back with some lame rip off song? Dude, just stay gone and die already. How many good songs do NIN have? 3? Ok, 5 at the most. Did he really have to come back and ruin one of them? The video was painful to watch. All he did was ruin one of NIN few good songs and their fan base. Couldn't he ruin a Creed or Motley Crue song instead? He went out with a whimper and I can't believe people actually bought that.

Nobody pleases everyone but to get down on JC like that...I just don't get it. This is from someone who is anything BUT a country music fan. Johnny was in a category of his own, like Dylan and Lennon. He changed that NIN song, which I liked originally, but his version is powerful as well. To say what you've said about one of the most iconic, influential and generally beloved singer/songwriters of our time....well, like I said, I don't get it. It would interest me to know who you DO like in music. Personally, I have never been a huge Elvis fan but I know what he did for music and, as much of a target as he made of himself in the end, I would never have wished he "die already" even back then.

Really, a very callous thing to say and it might say a lot about who you are.
