Either soundgarden, Metallica, or slipknot.

Favoring slipknot.

I watched them live in the audience. I cant remember how many concerts I've been to, I grew up in the 70's 80's and 90's and have hearing looss from all of them, but they were the best I ever saw.

Now I did see Leslie West in a small dive in Freeport Tx in the early 80's, friggin awesome!

Greatest how? Because this thread largely just looks like "what does you local classic rock station play?"

Is this more like "what's your favorite band?"
Or
"Who has done more to influence a particular musical genre?"
Or
"What is the greatest collection of ridiculously talented musicians ever to collaborate on a recording?"

Guys... Y'all are missing some real gems.

I would have to agree that Led Zep is by fr the best band. But, best stage show goes to Rammstein. See the show once before you say otherwise. Simply incredible!

Most people will respond by giving their favorite band.

My favorite band over the years is the Who. And they're arguably one of the best regardless of how you measure "best".

But I'd have to say that the Rolling Stones deserve the title as "best".

And as much as I like Zep, their inability to play anything live drops them out of the top 10.
Rock and Roll shouldn't be confined to the studio, and zeppelin is gawd-aweful to listen to on stage.
This doesn't diminish their ground breaking music, or the Page/Plant synergy. It just removes them from contention when discussing "best".

The Beatles chose not to tour.
Zep should have followed their lead.

+10000000

How do you define "best"

This thread has turned into "what is your favorite band"

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

I think that Prince is one of the best musicians that ever was. He plays all the instruments, does all the lyric and music writing and oversees all engineering and production on his stuff. That makes him a band. If that isn't good enough for you, then Prince & The Revolution. In the 80's the guy was Jesus. If he touched it, it was healed and came back from the dead and was fed with the multitudes and then went platinum.

How about Opeth?

Motorhead

AC/DC

Kiss

Genesis

Yes

King Crimson

The Cure

Joy Division

CAN

The Doors

Lots of great bands. None of them are best. Can't be defined because you gotta factor in what the person making the call likes.

Wtf taps?? An unanswerable question?? How dare you ask something inspiring debate and banter on an Internet forum.

Of course it's subjective, I think that was the point.

Anyway, the answer is still Slipknot.

Then maybe I should include Tool/A Perfect Circle/Pucifer/Maynard Keenan James.

From club/techno, to country, alternative, and whatever Tool would be classified.

Certainly one of the best minds in music.

Surprised there aren't more for The Eagles. They could all sing and play multiple instruments. Damn shame they didn't stay together longer!
