Northern Ireland bakery refuses to make Bert and Ernie gay-homo wedding cake
Published July 08, 2014

A bakery in Northern Ireland is under fire for refusing to make a gay-homo-themed cake featuring the Bert and Ernie characters from the children's TV show "Sesame Street."

According to The Guardian, Ashers Baking Company, which is run by Christians, released a statement defending its decision and said the slogan above the puppets was in support of gay-homo marriage.

The customer wanted to have a slogan from the group Queerspace on the cake, The Guardian reported.

"The directors and myself looked at it and considered it and thought that this order was at odds with our beliefs," Daniel McArthur, the general manager, said. "It certainly was at odds with what the Bible teaches, and on the following Monday we rang the customer to let him know that we couldn't take his order."

McArthur said the company offered to fully refund the customer, the report said.

McArthur confirmed to The Guardian that he received a letter from the watchdog Equality Commission.

"The Equality Commission's letter said that we had discriminated against the customer on the grounds of his sexual orientation," he said.

Northern Ireland is the only part of the United Kingdom where gay-homo marriage is still not legal. That ban is expected to face a legal challenge later this year, The Guardian reported.

I heard Burt was mad because Ernie refused marriage even after the courts ignored Californians votes. Apparently he'd been hooking up with Peppermint Patty and she's pre-op.

Applause Good for them, hope they stand their ground and WIN their case in Court. I guess a lot will depend on if their justices are flaming liberals like here in the US.

There are ways to stay true to your morals & ideals without creating a media circus.

Sure, we can make a real nice Burt and Ernie cake! No problem! We just need some time to get the right materials together, as they are currently out of stock and on backorder. Oh, and our cake decorator just quit on us, so we're going to need time to hire a new one - the great ones are just so hard to find, it could take months.. Also, we're restructuring to overthrow the "cake boss", so we will now only be producing large artistic culinary masterpieces. We'll need a 40K down payment to get started, with no guarantee on delivery date or final cost.

Will that be cash or charge, Mr. Vickie?

Outstanding reporting by the Guardian. Equality is only for those deserving of it. A cake for a private event is certainly a political statement. I wonder what would have happened if they had asked to use the restroom. Now they will have to settle for milk and cookies.

I think that's the same method they used to keep blacks out of country clubs for decades after the civil rights act. Good to know what side you'd be on in that case too.

When you own a business you do not have the right to discriminate. Do you really think no blacks allowed was right? This is exactly the same form of discrimination. If your religious or personal views do not tolerate gays, fine, but do not confuse them with discrimination.

Oh please, you idiot, explain to me how "I feel" fits in as a recollection of historical fact? You're just trolling and trying to divert attention from the fact that you encouraged using the exact same methods businesses and society clubs used in the 50's to discriminate against blacks.

And your response is that my statement must be based on "feelings"?

Did I mention anything about him being or not being on cbid? Why would you think I wouldn't want our mutual short-bus on the world-wide-web? Must be those critical thinking skills of yours. You understand the concept of irony?

You wanna show us some of those "historical facts" to back up what you said? Or is this how you were personally excluded from a country club somewhere?

You're just calling names and pulling the race card because you don't like what I said.

.

I never said racial discrimination was right, thats what Vickie incorrectly attempted to twist my words into.

I don't believe anyone has the right to force anyone else to create a cake celebrating a blasphemous union of two same-sex partners, however. God says its wrong, and thats who I answer to. Not the Supreme Idiots. Not public opinion. Not Vickie the communist wonderqueer.

By using the examples above, one can respect His wishes, legally. Which would be the part the militant queers can't stand, so they try to drag race into where it has no business being. More liberal bedwetting tactic. Learn how to detect and reject it.

If the homosexuals want cake, let them buy ovens, cake mix and frosting. And get busy with something other than each others cornholes. Or find a queer cakeboss.

Yo, short-bus, an example from the 90s is only one of the most classic business case studies:
http://www.nytimes.com/1994/05/25/us/denny-s-restaurants-to-pay-54-million-in-race-bias-suits.html

"...filed by thousands of black customers who had been refused service or had been forced to wait longer or pay more than white customers."

Funny, that's exactly what you recommended that bakery do. How co-ink-idental.

A few things...
1 - I never twisted your words into anything. I pointed out that the exact process you suggested has been historically used to discriminate against people on race.

2 - You aren't doing anything "legally".

3 - Why do you find it appropriate to discriminate against someone who is homosexual, but claim to not find it appropriate to discriminate against someone due to race?

1 - Yes you did.
2 - You cant prove that, therefore yes I am.
3 - Refusing to celebrate blasphemy is not discrimination, Victor, its called conviction.

I pointed out that you favor the same methods used to discriminate against blacks. You can claim I'm putting words in your mouth all you want, but perhaps you should re-assess the words you used.

Quote:

2 - You cant prove that, therefore yes I am.

The exact method you suggested was the basis of a well-known lawsuit which I posted. How can you still think what you're suggesting is legal? Are you really that dense?

So you're saying as long as there's a bible passage telling you not to do something, you can justify discriminating against any potential customer?
I mean... the bible has been used to justify keeping women as second class citizens, keeping interracial marriages illegal and supporting slavery. You sure you want to say that you support anyone who can defend their specific discrimination with a bible verse?

You can't pick and choose whichever bible verse you want to support.

I can pick and choose almost anything I like, including my customers. Well, anything I can afford to like that is. My convictions are free, so I'm good there.

Let me see if I can borrow ZRX's analogy, You're like a hanging turd and I'm ready to wipe? Or something to that order. Whatever. It smells like chit in here, and I'm pretty sure it isn't me.

You can have whatever dumb convictions you want.

You cannot discriminate against people based on random crap you find in a religious text. It's even more amusing that you are picking and choosing whatever lines fit with what you want to believe.

Your choice to not answer my points is telling. You're using the same excuses people did to defend discriminatory practices based on race or sexuality.

Yep it's tough.

This week I'll wake at 3:30 AM M,T,F,S, & S. Each of those days I'll work from 4:45 AM until 5:15 PM if I'm lucky enough to get relieved on time. Yesterday and today are my easy days. Up at 6:00 AM. At work for 7:00 AM and off at 5:00 PM. Today we'll head 2 hours away to the camp when we get off work.

On average I work 64 hours a week.
