I knew this was coming, it going to cost sixteen times more to destroy ammunition than to just use it on the range or give it to the folks fighting ISIS.

Quote:

GOP Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma is retiring this year. But he’s not shy and retiring. Coburn has released his 100-page “wastebook” detailing some of the more ridiculous ways Uncle Sam spends your hard-earned money. Needless to say, cnn.com starts its story on Coburn’s revelations with the three most absurd examples: “Monkeys taught how to gamble and play video games. People paid to watch grass grow. Swedish massages given to rabbits.” I was kind of hoping the feds gave Swedish meatballs to the rabbits, but that’s just me. Anyway, ammo. Seems the Pentagon was a bit ambitious and/or lackadaisical in its procurement process . . .

“The real shock and awe may have been the $1 billion price tag the Pentagon paid to destroy $16 billion worth of ammunition, enough to pay a full years’ salary for over 54,000 Army privates,” said Coburn.

The book cites Pentagon officials who said the surplus ammunition has become “obsolete, unusable, or their use is banned by international treaty.” The book notes a 2014 Government Accountability Office investigation which concluded poor record keeping was the reason the military purchased so much ammunition it didn’t need.

I think Coburn’s crusaders meant “couldn’t use.” That’s what they meant, right? ‘Cause if they didn’t need the ammo, well, I reckon a few readers (and a lot of large companies) would have gladly taken it off of Uncle Sam’s hands. No matter what the caliber.

I think this was announced a few months ago.

This admin has a hard-on for ammunition.

Destroying the militarys ammo, and trying their damndest to keep the general public from buying it.

It was announced, however the 16 billion dollar cost wasn't mentioned.

1Billion $ cost. It's destroying 16B worth of ammo.

Makes some sense. We aren't talking about regular ammo, clearly. Look at the words they use: obsolete, unusable or illegal. Think about it... odds are the ammunition is either obsolete (ie missiles for missile systems no longer in use); unusable (due to age and/or storage conditions) or illegal (can we say depleted uranium?)

These aren't things they can just give to the public without worrying about a lawsuit.

The bigger question is why the pentagon purchased this ammo when it was purchased. Why do we have such a surplus?

More like you'll gladly accept the 1.1Billion$ contract for the safe disposal of ammunition.

If any of this is DU rounds then yes it's illegal, dangerous and should only be handled by liberals.

Hollow points would also be illegal for the military.

I'm wondering how this ammo is obsolete. We've been at war for 13 years now. Did the military discontinue certain calibers ?

No. but.......the UN has been pissy about our use of .50 Cal depleted uranium rounds. And they're (UN) complaining about the use of .50 cal on people unless you shoot them when they're hiding behind a vehicle. Barrett developed the .416 just because of this. Also the Lupau .338 has gained popularity with snipers and specops.

My guess is that the owner of:

MIDWAY USA..... got the 1 billion dollar disposal contract and is now selling the ammo back to the civilian population at a discounted rate.
