I'm not sure I understand? Is your problem with him stating that at times in his life people assumed that a well dressed black man was the waiter or valet? Or is your problem with him calling waiters/valets "the help"?

I'm gonna include the link I'm assuming you referred to, since you neglected to:

Can we for once get away from calling him a well dressed black man & just say a well dressed man ?

Reminds me of the old joke ...

Q: If blacks in America call themselves African-Americans, what do blacks in Canada call themselves?

A: Canadians

Under normal circumstances, of course. In the example being cited in the OP, he is trying to relate an experience very specific to black males in the US.

“There’s no black male my age, who’s a professional, who hasn’t come out of a restaurant and is waiting for their car and somebody didn’t hand them their car keys," he said

HORSE SCHITT! No exceptions?

I think it only happens with well-dressed black men with a smug look on their face.

So I'm still confused.

Are you calling horse shcitt on this because as a professional black male, you know for a fact there are exceptions?

But, we're *always* reminded about things that happened 50 years ago. The busiest airport in the world is *loaded* with reminders. There's even a newly built museum downtown. Just about every historical road in Atlanta has been renamed.

Yawn

Ummm.... dude, he's talking about an instant in one's life, not every day.
The implication in the sentence is that every professional black man has had to deal with that at least once in their life.

Are you really interested in arguing that point? Sure.. .you might find a couple who haven't. But it seems a really strange thing to get upset over.

Victor ... 1+1=2 ... AND, the sun will rise in the East tomorrow. These things are surely just as silly to argue about, but I know you'll find a way.

What just as silly to me is always talking about petty crap like this. As if someone mistook you for a hired-hand, and you snivel about it years on end.

The "struggle" is hard. Hard, I tell you !!

Yes, I do like to disagree with people. But think about this post in the first place.
All Obama said is that he's been mistaken as a valet, and that all professional black men have at one point in their lives (I'm paraphrasing).

And while that may be an exaggeration (do we care if it's 98.2% or 100%?) it's certainly not anything either you or I or any other white male have the knowledge to dispute... Yet the OP decided to argue it.

Seriously... the quote from the book didn't seem like a big deal. He wasn't making a big deal about it, he was simply stating something that happened to him to try to connect with other non-president black males who likely had similar experiences. Why are people even bothering to argue it?

When I was an Army Brat, we had an East German Housekeeper when we lived in Germany.. Back in the States ,we had a Negro Lady named Isabel, she was ok.

When we moved to Texas when I was 10, we had a Mexican live in gal.

The white East German gal was the best. The other two were lazy and stole the silverware,,,( that's what my mom said)

What bothers me about the whole thing is that it seems that instead of doing something to solve the problem of racism he perpetuates it. He is suppose to be the leader of the U.S. and should lead by example but that's usually not the case with his actions.

I don't know. Obviously, we'd all love for it to be "solved", but that means really different things to different people.

I'd argue that given his historic position (the first black american president) he's done a decent job of balancing. There are groups who think it's his job to weigh in as a black man on almost every racial issue in the US. Notice, he's only commented on a handful of them over 6+ years of being in office. He's in a challenging position from that angle.

Hell, look what happens when he makes a pretty innocuous comment... people throw a fit, it becomes a news story, some groups are clearly now upset... it's amazing to me because it's a trivial statement acknowledging that at some time in his life he was treated differently because he was black.... he's not really complaining... he's president of the USA. He's just acknowledging it... Imagine what an outcry there would be if he said something substantive about race.

I certainly don't see how he's "perpetuated" racism.... maybe you see some actions, but none have struck me as doing so.

He's a ******* elitest. If he ever climbs out of his ivory tower & stops taking $200 million vacations, then might "feel our pain".

Hell, Dubya would take this as a compliment. Obama cries about it. Whiny assed no backbone white gloves liberal.

At least Dubya got blisters running a chainsaw on the ranch.

Obama got his blisters jerking off Reggie Love.

^ They're looking up to you. Obama is looking down. And complaining about it. He's the leader of the free world & he's crying that someone mistook him for someone who works to support his family, but didn't bow down to kiss his ass. Sounds like someone who has an inferioror complex. If he would grow a set of balls, maybe he wouldn't have to whine about his insecurities to the whole world. Jesus, this guy is a pansy ass ****.

Victor, If you cannot see how this President has put racial relations in this country On It's ASS....then you are willfully Blind. He has and will continue to drive a wedge between the two races until his term is up. He HAS absolutely surrounded himself with other likewise racists who have also done more damage than ANY drop of good that they could have. Forgetting Obama for the moment (whom I think cheapens the white house by making stupid comments and assuming colberts role etc)........ I am in no way defending his statement because I too have been mistaken for the help. getting mistaken for the help when wearing a red shirt at target or a blue shirt at best buy or lowes (don't even get me started on the orange shirt at home depot) is a burden I am going to have to carry for the rest of my life. Someday I hope to break these suburban chains that bind me.

It is sort of amazing to me that in the grand scheme of things it was not very long ago that blacks were owned, and while many were probably treated well (if you want to call it that) many were absolutely brutalized. Beaten, raped, seperated from family etc. They were not considered people and thus subject to the various methods folks use to train other animals. Even after slavery was out lawed it was still quite awhile until they had similar rights as the whites. We are talking during my parents generation let alone my grand parents. This is a very short time.

What is amazing to me is they haven't been MORE viloent or killed us all in our sleep LOL. I'm sure women of all color would help them LOL. Honestly it is an amazing thing it has been as peaceful as it has been rather than being much worse. it is also amazing to me the people that think they should just get over it or deal with it. I realize they should be mad at their own kind in afrika for capturing them and selling them, we were simply purchasing a readily available commodity and the real blame lies there.... but I don't expect these savages to understand the reality.

The history of all this just fascinates me.

sigh.

Acknowledging problems that do exist isn't "driving a wedge". The wedge existed already. He isn't making racism worse, he's (barely occasionally) pointing it out.

From our standpoint it looks like it's getting worse. Because we're old white men. Prior to anyone pointing out the problems that exist, things are great for us. Because we're on top. From the standpoint of individuals who aren't old white men, those problems always existed.

And if you think his statement was delivered with "much intent" then what do you think the intent was? Assuming that the statement was true (and lets be honest, the professional black man mistaken as a waiter/valet in a fancy place is such an accepted trope it shows up in mainstream movies... it isn't like obama stated something which people haven't pointed out before) then what is his malicious intent in stating something which is true?

Ok drafter. I'll bite.

If what he said was true, and what he said would cause Outrage, then shouldn't there be Outrage?

Should one avoid stating the truth simply to keep the status quo? Even if the status quo means one group is going to regularly get the shaft?

ever notice who the folks are that don't want to talk about it.

I had an interesting conversaiton with an old Jew today that made me think about something I'd never thought of. She has friends in Germany (non jew) who are kids of WWII era german folk. Apparantly there is a weird nuance between the kids of that generation and the adults due to the fact their parents were part of the holocost but never wanted to talk about it or admit it (nobody seems to have had anything to do with it). The next generation has/had a certain level of distrust for their parents generation as a result.

Nothing to do with this subject but interesting to me and I don't really care if it's interesting to you.

Dude... you realize what you're saying right?

"Let's just stop talking about racism, because it gives me a sad"?

Look at what people are having a problem about. The president is acknowledging that racism exists. He isn't asking white people for an apology or anything. He isn't asking you to do anything at all. Yet people get so upset about even acknowledging that it exists. Makes you wonder what they're so afraid of.
