I have been smoking cigars for about 2 years. I have been making it through my first 2 starter packs of 50 misc. cigars that I purchased and started to get an idea of what cigars I enjoy.

My college gave me an Onyx Reserve cigar late last year and it was excellent and I am now having a hell of a time finding them locally or on this website. The only place I can find them is at CigarsInternational.com and they are asking $5-8 a cigar, which honestly isnt a bad price, but its not a slick deal like I can get on this site. I have seen them rarely here, and I am wondering if there is a reason.

Is there a cigar out there that compares well to the Onyx reserve, which is more readily available in this market? Or am I just over-hyping the Onyx stick and should just move on? Boo hoo!

Don't take this to mean that I accept your premise that Onyx are QUALITY cigars, but the answer is probably in this thread somewhere:

http://www.cigarbid.com/...the-QUALITY-cigars-gone

Altadis, General, Fuente, others....the mfr is afraid that you might get a deal here

Heard good things, got some, tried one - not good at all.

early on in my cigar hobby I smoked quite a few of them and liked them at that time...but it became evident that the black wrappers were dyed. It would get on my fingers and lips.

So I am gathering that the general consensus is that I should move on, because it is an over-hyped cigar based on the 94 rating.

Also, after looking at the link provided by dsteiger, it appears like I should be moving toward the cigarsinternational.com purchases rather then cigarbids and pay a little extra to find the quality cigars. I am assuming that most of you guys have a "rotation stash" which you keep high end cigars and then an every day cigar which you are more willing to burn.

So I am going to move on from Onyx and maybe look to the Rocky Petal's or Tattoo and try those out.

Rating numbers are deceiving. Like wines, whenever a cigar gets a high rating like that, they still tout it years later regardless of any decline in quality or re-blending that might or might not have occurred. Unlike wines, they don't tell you what year the cigar was awarded that rating or who awarded it. For all we know, that 94 could have come from three guys named Fred all working at the Quickie-Mart gas station 12 years ago.

Not sure about your conclusions, but perhaps you should skip Rocky Patel for now or forever. If you mean Tatuaje tattoo or the Tatuaje line, I've not been overly impressed yet with the 2 I've tried and the Tattoo didn't do much for me.

Agree that you have arrived at some puzzling conclusions.....

-Cigars International and Cigar Bid are the same....any cigars from here are identical to those that you find at CI. Despite those links there are SOME good cigars here on cbid....

-I do smoke a 'range' of cigars, but mostly for variety....and because after spending years wading in the shallow end, I did discover a few 'cheaper' cigars that I enjoy

-I concur with some above....don't spend much time with RockyPetals...and I do NOT concur with Tony; there are very few (none?) bad Tatuaje....not all are worth the price to me, but EVERY one I've ever had is better than any Onyx I've ever had....and the Tatoo is a phenomenal value

Smoked a ton of Onyx in my noob period. Moved on from there to Rocky CAO,and Gurkha. Now I'm firmly in the camps of Oliva (V, O, G), La Aurora, La Flor Dominicana, Arturo Fuente, Diamond Crown.I like some Tatuaje and Liga Provada. There are some good boutique brands, Crux, Foundry, Crowned Heads, Viaje, and others.
Through it all, I've found a couple low price smokes that I like, 5 Vegas A & AAA, La Herencia Cubana Oscuro Fuerte, and some Diesels.
Regardless of the arguments, protestations, and recommendations of others, try lots of cigars, you'll find many you like and many you don't. Price and/or popularity don't guarantee that you will like it. There are 1000s of cigars on the market, find the ones you like and smoke a good one.

And you may not like the cigars others do. Try to find someone who likes the same cigars you do and try what they like- palates do vary and have been known to change in time.

Thank you for all the feedback. Clearly I need to just keep trying different cigars and not focus on one brand in particular.

Thanks again.
