Trump and Ryan 'totally committed' to party unity

The two are trying to find common ground after Mr Ryan said he could not endorse the presumptive Republican nominee.
He has said the businessman lacked conservative principles.
"We had a great conversation this morning," the two wrote in a joint statement.
"While we were honest about our few differences, we recognise that there are also many important areas of common ground."
They said they would be having "additional discussions" but think they can unify the party and win the election.
At a press conference following the meeting, Mr Ryan said he was "very encouraged" by what he heard from Mr Trump.

What a load of chit. If the Republicans don't win this election they are out of cards moving forward. They have played all of their jokers/wildcards and have nothing left. fog

Isn't that what they thought about Obama? I think Hillary is more vulnerable than Obama was. She is definitely flawed in key areas. Beer

She has one key advantage though. The entitlement voting machine. If they can get that rolling she will win a general election

This was theirs to win. But the Republican party decided that having intelligent candidates was just one step too far and gave us trump....

... Any crying about entitlement voters is just meaningless whining. The Republicans will totally lose this election cycle on their own merit.

buckwheat, i agree, they are full of chit....ryan should have thrown his hat in the trump ring and said he and trump now need to iron out a few issues......why ryan has to be a snob about this baffles me.....trump is your man, like it or not....you are either with him all the way or you are not........the same goes for all the other republican snobs who have been proven wrong in their evaluation of trump's capabilities. He blew away 16 other repubs and destroyed them!

Now the washington post is stating they have placed 20 reporters to dig into trump's past. Trump has them pooping in their pants and for every item they attack trump on, he will unleash a unholy terror on them of biblical proportions. Trump has smelled blood and will stop at nothing to take the whole carcass.

Hillary is very vulnerable. This is clear from the success Sanders has had.

But for any Republican to look at hillary as a vulnerable candidate and not recognize the immense weakness in their own candidate is just myopic.

Not correct. Ryan said he "was not ready" to endorse Trump. There is a big difference. Playing chess to get influence/support is common at this stage.

Either Ryan ends up endorsing Trump or he is finished as Speaker.

Either way the American people lose with the choices we have this cycle. Brick wall

EIGHT effing years to find, clean, polish and buff ONE effing candidate. They had millions like me ready to pull the lever.

and still whining about nonsense like entitlement voters. As TW accurately said, the least likely to vote...and the ones they target to keep from easily voting. Don't worry, they won't vote.

what an out of touch pathetic party. Did I mention that they squandered EIGHT effing years? Now that's leadership!

But even people who lean right have to admit their party should not control both Congress and the Presidency while they are actively psychotic and rudderless.

I don't think we're going to be that lucky.

I might be wrong, but it looks like this fiasco could screw up other Republican elections. People like TW will stay home and not vote for their local candidate. Then we get unfettered dem legislation. Of course, the past 8 years of opposing every stupid little thing has been irritating too.

I'd like it if the politicians actually just sort of ran the government a little... Maybe do their jobs for a few years.... Hell... Maybe that would be bad too.

Then elect different politicians.

Seriously....

At this point I'd take actual government work in any direction. The past 8 years has been a bunch of legislators doing nothing and collecting a nice tidy paycheck (and retirement).

People joke about government gridlock being good, because at least they aren't screwing anything up.... But the reality of them just barely kicking the budget can down the street until the next crisis and then refusing to do anything else is just f-ing tiring.

My point wasn't who lies more, my point was how can we expect to vote in better politicians when we have NONE to choose from?

Clinton is a giant, lying, treasonous POS. I would never, ever vote for her. Ever.

I was talking more at the congressional level with my rant. Although I agree that at the presidential level we're getting the royal spiked shaft this year, there is a lot of work that actually is supposed to be done at the congressional level. Which hasn't. Those lazy azzholes have been sitting around doing jack-**** for at least 8 years. Between their refusal to work, their scheduled holidays and the time they take to go back to their home state to run for re-election.... nothing is accomplished.

very few on this site will admit to what we all are seeing. Ef that "all politicians" crap and comment about the insane state of the side you support. Saying that they "all are whatever" is deflecting what the GOP IS.

They suck. But say it honestly and without adding the side that has taken a beating for EIGHT years. Admit that the Right sucks just as much.

Maybe then we can all find something better.

It's OK. You'll feel better.

There has been 8 years of whining here. Now it's cleansing time...admit that the others got nuthin' either!

EIGHT YEARS Gene!!! And no candidate?

Why ask me to defend the GOP? The majority republicans parliament of whores, (Congress), gave Obummer fast track trade authority and continue to spend money like democrats. They in the same club as the democrats, the in power club, and no one here, well maybe HD, is or will ever be a member. Get out of that them versus us party ditch, neither party gives a crap about anyone that is not paying to keep them in power. IMO, the only thing that would change the two party power club is a revolution. As I have said before and don't like saying, the French had the right idea when they built all those guillotine machines.

It is amazing to Me....

Even when your pretty much an honest well meaning
Guy like Ryan seems to be...

They jockeying....
For position ...
And bull cr#p you still have to project...
Just to "get your own way"....

I mean the guy is "third in line" to the presidency...

And he's bargaining with a FIVE + TIMES
BANKRUPTED ( using other people's money)
"Business man".......
Ryan should just tell him what to do...
He has earned it...

Why negotiate...

Just dictate and be done with it...
He has the power to really throw this election either way and even a total moron on the street knows that.

I LOVE the heading...
"Find common ground meeting".,.

The fly on the wall ( a Washington insider) told me that
Ryan's opening line to Trump
Was....

Okay, Frank. I'll admit it that the Republicans suck balls. They do. You're right.

They had 8 friggin' years to find someone who I could vote for in good conscience. They failed. Miserably.

I will not, however, vote for either Clinton or Sanders. As GH Bush said... Not gon' do it.

I feel better, MACS. Just wanted to see a conservative say it without adding libs to the comment too.

Gene, didn't think I framed you as the official apologist for the GOP. I must admit you do often denounce both major parties with your "parliament of whores" phrase...it's just that it is so rare to hear an actual knock on the right without a rider attached by including a swipe at the left as well.

This is not a defense of anything to the left, just a comment on cons here trying to look open minded and fair by knocking their own, yet unable to resist mentioning the libs in the same breathe. Kind of takes the starch out of real criticism.

MACS managed to do it, and even admitted he is still compelled to vote that way, but not in good conscience.

So with the subject at hand, Ryan/Trump/party unity...8 YEARS? What does that say to a voter like me who leans left, has voted GOP before, and was willing to do so again, when they can not run their party properly with nearly a decade of lead time? I'm not feeling the confidence that they understand the direction for the country, never mind the world.

Count me in the club Frank. It is unfathomable that we are left with the choices we have, but certainly not surprising. This election defines the notion of voting for the lessor of two evils.

Consider Hillary. She and her philandering husband define the Democratic party. Without them, one wonders in what direction that party would evolve. I'm actually very confounded that the rank and and file as well as the party elite would choose her. Billiary is in reality the polar opposite of their platform. The Dems have championed the idea of tolerance and equality for everyone. Yet, Bill has for many, many years apparently viewed women as objects to be taken advantage of. As a couple Bill and Hillary epitomize the elite, yet they constantly condemn them for the very same actions that they are notorious for.

Trump on the other hand has consistently demonstrated aversion to basic rights guaranteed citizens in the Constitution. As a businessman he has been very successful which would lead one to believe he is qualified to manage the business of the United States. But, I would argue that the business philosophy that has made him very successful in private business is contrary to what it takes to successfully helm a government. Government, unlike private industry can't sell off unsuccessful subsidiaries. Nor can she use the bankruptcy courts to mitigate a bad investment. I shudder to think what would sort of economic trend would result should the US Government tell it's investors to pound sand. The only saving grace is that Congress would hopefully act to thwart such foolish policies. In many ways, Trump is a known unknown.

So how did we reach this juncture? More importantly, where do we go from here?
