Your wallet may not like it but your taste buds will be happy. If they don't have otoro, then ask for chutoro. Lesser impact and lesser taste experience. Nonetheless, both are a step up from maguro...but of course, like anything, ymmv.
If neither are available but you still feel adventurous, ask the chef if they can do omakase. That's basically "Chef's Choice" and you will get dishes that you probably have never tried / known about because of the scarcity of the item. Again, it might be a bigger hit on your bank account but you will definitely broaden your sushi experience.
Heading back out tonight wth the wife... the place we go isn't really diverse but I'm gonna ask about the otoro...
When we go out to paso robles there's a place with the omakase option... I'm just nervous because i haven't really found anything i like other than tuna and as much as I'd like to discover something new that i like, I'm afraid of missing out on what i know i like...
Also saw bluefin on the menu at that place in paso robles and want to try that next time I'm there... how is that different from maguro?
Its probably not "traditional" but the place i frequent serves the nigiri with toasted sesame seeds and the little tiny fish eggs and a little bit of green onion on top... I've fallen in love with it...
