This is going to be a big one for Orlando now. Lots of moving factors to really know for certain exactly what to expect. Raining all the time. No winds - yet. Supposed to get 10"-20" of rain over the next 36 hours. Continually lowering pool water close to 6" in anticipation. Also got a bag of powder chlorine shock to keep the chlorine levels up tomorrow or Thursday. I am worried that my pool, pool deck, back porch, etc. will flood into the house. Unfortunately, I don't think we have flood coverage for that (rising water") because we don't live in even a 100 year flood zone and we are about 4- feet above the nearby lake. Wife started bringing in all the outdoor plants and stuff She has friend coming over move the bigger furniture since I cannot do much of anything for at least four more weeks.

Imagine keeping cell phones fully charged would be a high priority.

Can’t fathom being a newbie and take on a hurricane.

If power goes out, cell towers will run on battery power for a bit. When that goes out, won't matter if you have a full charge.

Cars have USB ports... can charge my cell phone if needed.

Might be prudent for any car owner to have one of these in their trunk car for emergency.
https://tinyurl.com/5n7wdhcz

It’s a small, compact and can be stored in the trunk along with jumper cables in case there is nobody around to jump start your car. It's small enough to store in a glove box but I'm not sure I would want a large capacity Li-ion battery sitting in the passenger compartment especially in the baking summer heat. I’ve used it to jump start a previous commuter car and a friend’s smaller SUV. I was surprised that such a small thing would work but I’ve only used in on smaller engines. Probably wouldn’t work on a bigger block or a diesel engine. It also doubles as an additional source to charge phones and stuff with its USB outlets.

Also had something similar to this that I kept at home.
https://tinyurl.com/mrx7776j

Larger and more balls if needed to jump a larger engine. Air compressor to top off your tires in your driveway rather than paying $2.00 at a gas station. Also has USB charging ports.

In CA, gas stations are required to provide free air/water.

I dunno about FL. But with gas prices as crazy as they are in CA, they need to give you something for free!

In MA most gas stations charge for air. Some of the smaller mom and pop places or independent stations, car repair shops, tire shops still have free air from a hose on the side of their garages but they are very few and far between.

I'd normally use an air compressor that plugged into the cigarette lighter or the battery back to top the tires off at home in the driveway when needed. I'm told that keeping your tires properly inflated can eliminate the need for drilling new oil wells and save the earth from global warming and stuff.

^Good to know. WAWA is very close by.

Still not quite raining here yet. Sprinkling, so the ground and the truck is wet... but not full on rain, yet. Not overly windy, either.

My brother lives in evacuation zone C. Zones A & B are evacuated and parts of zone C was added to the evacuation area but not where he is at. Too late to evacuate even if he wanted.

That’s the fun with hurricanes. Once you decide you made a mistake and want to leave it is too late and unsafe. Now you just sit and listen to the wind. He’s getting sustained tropical storm winds but not hurricane strength yet.

I saw that the eye wall is 40 miles wide. That 40 miles on the coast where this hits will be leveled like a 40 mile wide bull dozer.

In Puerto Rico after Maria destroyed everything there was extremely limited areas of coverage. We had to drive to certain spots just to hopefully get a bar or two of coverage; there were cars all over the side of the road in thos areas. Eventually, they had some floating cell towers to assist, hopefully in the 5 years since the ability to get these out has increased.

Indian tribes? You can’t say that! Aren’t they called Guardians now? Hold on, going to call the Bureau of Indian Affairs and see if it is ok to say Indian…

My dad is a HAM radio operator. Back in the early 80's we had a few tornadoes that came through town one night (Eau Claire, WI). Knocked out all TV and most of the radio towers. Only service was a small backup tower that didn't get blown over. He worked at the local radio station and kept it up and running along with the HAM radio operators doing transmissions to help the local emergency people coordinate clean up and stuff.

While we were hunkered down in the basement, Dad was outside reporting on his mobile HAM radio on what was happening in our neighborhood then went to the radio station to keep it up and running. My mom was pissed - scolding him to get in the basement for safety. He he had a duty to do to keep communications going in town and help with emergency contacts and clean up.

Nothing ties a town together more than an emergency. Neighbors helping neighbors, people pulling together for a greater cause. It gives you a warm feeling that even with our differences, we can put that aside in times of need.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned what Ian did in Cuba. Pinar del Río was flattened. That's the heart of all the Cuban tobacco farms. Their homes, barns, curing sheds and farming equipment are gone. No electricity and their water sources are screwed. It will take a long time to recover. The only place on the island with power are the tourist areas. Those poor farmers are screwed.

Lots of infrastructure to rebuild as usual but no crops in the field this time of year. They get wiped out seems like every 3-4 years. Even worse than Florida.

Now they have a good reason for all those price increases.

Yeah, with the cost of Cuban cigars... ME... A Cuban cigar freakin' snob, had already stopped buying them. Until they come back down to Earth with the prices (not likely now) I've been finding stuff I like from elsewhere to fill the void, and revisiting stuff I used to like.

Pre-embargo, Cuba was pretty much the top tier place producing cigars, and had the vast majority of experienced farmers, blenders, rollers, etc. no?

With the massive growth in the NC farming and production over the last 30-40 years or so, are Cuban cigars still considered "superior" to NC or just "different?"
