Shawn and I are planning an offshore fishing charter out of Venice, LA this winter (November-February). Targeted species will be giant yellowfin tuna, wahoo and perhaps swordfish. It’s safe to assume everyone will take home at least 50 - 100 pounds of meat, maybe more.

We’ll be going out 30-60 miles offshore on a 39’ Contender center console that cruises around 50-60 knots. It can accommodate up to 6 people.

The plan is to get to Venice the day before. Spend the night in a condo, go out the following morning for 10-12 hours then spend another night in the condo before heading home.

The charter cost is $2200. Add another $800-$1500 for fuel depending on price and amount burned, plus crew gratuities. She told me to budget $4000, but it should be less. Add to that two nights accommodations which is about $600 for up to 6 people.

So total should be no more than $4,600. Split 6 ways is $766 or less per person. Pretty good deal considering how much fish you should bring home.

Deposits will be required 2 weeks in advance or sooner if required by charter company. That way no one is forced to pay extra if someone backs out at the last minute.

Post up if interested.

Definitely going:

BTW, if you want to go and will need to fly then make arrangements to land in New Orleans (MSY) before 3 PM if possible and I can pick you up at the airport which I’ll pass by on my way.

dayum...I've got left wrist/thumb surgery scheduled for late October...surgeon said it'll be immobilized for two months, then several months of physical therapy...not sure if it'll be healthy by February

No worries. Will probably reschedule for June or July of 2024. Talked to a few Captains and they said those are the two most likely months that weather would not affect the trip. Would hate to plan something and have it go south at the last minute. Fish won’t be as large, but we’ll be able to target more species.

I'm very much looking forward to doing this.

A) Never fished the Gulf
B) Prolly be my best shot at a triple digit fish (100+ lbs)
C) It's always fun to go fishing

If we go in June or July we would be targeting:
Red Snapper (season opens in May and goes until quota is caught)
Other snappers
Amberjack
Cobia
Yellowfin Tuna (fish are smaller but more abundant than in the winter)
Mahi Mahi
Wahoo

The giant yellowfins show up later in the year, but are hit or miss. However, there’s a greater chance of the trip getting canceled due to weather in the winter months because cold fronts will bring high winds and big waves.

That brings us to the reason for moving the trip to the summer months. All charters require a deposit to book. If a trip gets canceled none of the charters refund the deposit. They apply it to a future trip that usually must be rebooked within a year. This could present a problem for people flying in. One would need to purchase a ticket that can be rescheduled or refunded.

Go to Cabo San Lucas. I caught a 140lb striped marlin years ago. Took me 45min to get it in.
(Not to say there aren't plenty of opportunities in the Gulf too)
