To me this used to be the benchmark of scotch. This was in the days that I drank Cutty Sark and JB Rare. On the rare occasion Chivas Regal. On the even rarer occasion Chivas Regal Salute. When I drank it,I thought I was heaven. I couldn't afford to buy a bottle but the thought always remained. Fast forward about 30 years. This Xmas while shopping at Costo,I saw a Display with the Royal Salute in a cigar humidor. So,on impulse I buy it. It was Xmas,so I say what the hay. I just got around to trying it the other day. Man,what a major disapointment. Practically flavorless when compared to the good single malts I've been drinking. To top it off the humidor is lined with aromatic cedar making it useless for any good cigars. I think my Acids found a new home,LOL. Goes to show you that Scotch makers don't necessarily know how to make a cigar humidor. Oh well, live and learn. X

X,

Could you please school me on the single malt scotch mystique? I'm still nursing on Cutty Sark. Any reasonable priced (if there is such at thing) ones you can recommend?
Thanx -K

Kaikai,Try Oban single malt. A very flavorful Semi-inexpensive Scotch. You can then experiment on your own. Well,as far as your budget allows. X

Glenlivet at Costco for $20.99 is a pretty decent buy for a good single malt ... the experimenting that X recommends should come with a caveat ... like smoking good cigars, it's all but impossible to go back, once you've stepped forward ... witness his disappointment with the Chivas ...

X ... your mention of Cutty Sark, J&B Rare and an occasional Chivas takes me back a ways ... you've nailed the drinking pattern of my formative years .... I've still got a bottle of Chivas that I've had for more than 25 years ... there were two, but in a moment of insanity, I opened the other ... gotta tell you that 25 years in the bottle does NOT improve that stuff ... on the contrary, it was found to be totally undrinkable after a small sampling, and the remaining contents went down the drain and the bottle went into the trash ... the one I've got left is good for no more than decoration ...

Steve, what do you mean undrinkable. Did it go bad from age? X

k, if you want an all-around good single malt try Glenfiddich ($28) or McCallen 12 ($40). My favorite is Dalwhinnie 15yr. ($45-50). If you are on a "mission", stick with Glenlivet.....but, I find that it screams with apple over-tones with a good stogie.

Thanx Sonny, I read it somewhere but I can't for the life of me remember where but I take it any scotch with "glen" in the name is good to go. -K

X ...

I'm guessing age is what caused it to go bad ... when I say undrinkable, it no longer resembled scotch of any quality ... it was nothing more than a vile-tasting scotch-colored liquid ..

of course, there ARE those who think that's a description of scotch in general ... LOL ... . but as a scotch lover from way back, I assure you ... it's undrinkable

LOL,I believe you. I was wondering because it would have to be bad before I threw it away.
E-Chick,I've started lots of threads. I just didn't have anything to say as of late. X

"... it would have to be bad before I threw it away. " ....

Exactly ... me too ... I tried it more than once to be sure ... LOL ... even after I was convinced it was no good, it still really hurt to dump a bottle of scotch I'd had for more than 20 years ... that's why I still have the second one ... I'll just keep dusting it off and tell myself this one is probably OK ... I don't think I'd be up to uncorking it and confirming the awful truth ...
