Just had my first Gurkha yesterday evening. I am a firm believer that one of the reasons we like a cigar or not is the circumstances (or environment) in which we smoke it. To be fair, this was probably a poor choice of cigar to try and unwind with, at the end of a less than stellar day.

Gurkha is the dynamite, top-of-the-line Dominican. Gurkha cigars are hand-rolled from the finest tobaccos grown in the Cibao Valley of the Dominican Republic. The gorgeous, dark, oily and deliciously smooth Habana 2000 wrapper imparts a rich, creamy flavor with a hint of spice and pleasant, complex finish. Quite simply, this is a magnificent cigar with a super-smooth taste. The thick ring gauge helps to deliver an express train of sweet-smooth flavor.

Ok, it looked good and burned good BUT "Complex finish" and "deliver an express train of sweet-smooth flavor"??? Come on people, please. Sometimes I feel like a salesman writes this stuff.

So I ask, does Gurkha have something actually worth all the hype that surrounds the brand? Or should I just move on?

It's simple ...

... all cigars are sujective to each individual taste, and that will develop and change over time, so if it's not the cigar for you ... move on.

Then come back to it a few months, or even a year or so down the line. Try it again ... under different circumstances.

If it doesn't do it for you then ... you know it's just not your 'cup of tea'.

No big deal. There are just too many good cigars out there, that you will find more to your liking ...

Ya think? I agree, not a big fan of those Gurkha's either, but as Slim points, out, I'm sure there are people who absolutely love them.

I just tried my first Gurkha regent last night, too, and my experience was somewhat similar. A very good cigar, no doubt--well made and a nice flavor (though I disagree about the great finish--the beginning was better), but just not living up to the hype. I do think it will continue to improve with age, but I also believe one's developing tastes and other cigars you've smoked the same day play a role. For example, earlier in the day yesterday I enjoyed an IT super fuerte, and my experience is that it's difficult to go from a full-bodied cigar like this to something milder and then be able to fully appreciate the subtleties of the milder cigar. Anyway, I think Gurkha is a very well made product line, but there are others I enjoy more at that price range. Also, it may just be me, but has anyone else noticed how similar the regular Gurkha line is to the Sancho Panza in taste? I found them to be almost identically nuanced in flavor, although the SP is cheaper and with slightly more taste.

I'm a big fan of the Gurkhas but not particularly the Regents. I suggest trying an Expedition series or a Masters Select No. 1 before you check out on the Gurkhas. They are one of my favorite smokes but I hear you guys on the Regents. The Master Selects are strong but smooth. I really enjoy them, but as we all know, taste is in the palate of the individual smoker. Happy Herfin!

Hey, I am open minded. Like I said, it was probably a bad choice for the end of a cruddy day.
