do you ever not bid on an auction, when there is only a small quantity available, out of respect for the first bidder?

... only if I know the person personally. I've done that for a few of my friends, and they have done it for me. Other than that ... what respect? It's an auction, and if I really want it, I will bid to my limit ...

I only pass on it if it's a friend. Otherwise, it's fair game. That's the nature of the beast.

Ditto...If it's only a fellow member of the club, then I won't overbid them
