Hi There,
As a newbie I am in search of a favorite smoke. I have tried this one brand that I found that the cigar burns through the center and leaves the outer part of the filler and wrapper untouched. I also found that the cigar is denser and heavier than most that I have tried with the same length and ring size. Could this be a humidity problem or something else? I keep all my sticks in one humidor that seems to keep good readings on the two hydrometers that are in it. Any comments would be interesting to read. Thanks

Every so often you get one like that, even in typically good quality cigars. I had an ERDM Larga recently that did this and a friend from CBid had a PI do the same. I put the remainder of mine down for extensive aging under the belief that there is a huge difference in the moisture content between the filler and the wrapper/binder.

This is also sometimes due to improper aging of the wrapper. Putting them down for a good long while is worth a try. If you have any left and can take 'em back, do it!

#1 cause: Probably smoking it a bit too fast or with a bit too much enthusiasm. This will either create tunnelling (what you described) or coning...the opposite problem.

Whether or not your smoking technique would create either problem depends upon the moisture distribution within your cigar.

The only other reason outside of fast smoking for this to happen would be if you transferred a dry cigar to an over humid environment and haven't given the cigar time to transfer the humidity throughout the cigar.

Here's a link (I'm pretty sure it is not a retail or competitor link). This has some pretty good descriptions of burn problems.

Ray;
Good little reference site. I am typically an agressive smoker. I do let a cigar rest a bit longer if it seems to want to burn uneven. I have had the tunneling problem, noticed it right off and did everything possible to stop it. Nothing worked, heck I was so disgusted I cut off ahead of the burn and relit it. Same deal.
A smoking buddy of mine had the same problem with the same type of cigar, he is a non-agressive well seasoned smoker. The two smokes were purchased different times/places.
Another reason could be rushed production to meet demand. Easiest way to shorten production availibility I think, is to reduce post construction aging.
Not arguing just adding. I believe (hope) my problems will be remedied with the humi time I am giving.

Again, good post and link - BUD

No problem. My answer was the simplistic approach. There are a number of cigars that will just tunnel, cone and run regardless of smoking technique. I guess you have found one of those.

The last and best fix is just what you said. Age and stabilization.

From time to time I find myself smoking a cigar I particularly like with a bit of enthusiasm. I manage to get some interesting effects, like a 1" ash that's glowing from end to end, to name one.

Thanks to everyone with all their comments. The 2 cigars I had this happen to were in a sampler pack, so I will allow the rest to ages some in the humi and see if this helps. It was mentioned that this sampler was hard to keep on the shelf by the retailer. So a rush in production may be it also. We will see....
I was surprized by all the responces in such a short time. My thanks to everyone for the help...
