So I go to the local tobacconist's today. Felt like buying a 'gar, and relaxing in their lounge area for a while. I picked out a CAO Gol!, and go to checkout. I asked the guy behind the counter if they carry Opus X. He tells me that when they get their shipment in (couple times a year), that the owner of the store buys ALL the boxes of Opus X for himself. So customers never see em, or get a chance to buy any. Does anyone else find this disturbing? I've never had one, and was hoping I might be able to try one from the local shop. But this makes me not want to go back (only shop in town though), since the owner could be so 'stingy'.

On a lighter note. The Gol! was my first, and definatly not my last. That was one hum-dinger of a smoke and I enjoyed it all the way down to the nub.

You smoked a good one! Brazilia's are GREAT!

If thats what the owner is doing, they are pretty stupid to tell you, in my opinion.

They could have just said that the cant get them or something. But to tell you he is hogging them for himself, wont sit too well with regulars who like them. Its just not good customer relations.

I would be pissed! Just my opinion.... :>)

I would put the same question to the owner himself. If he can't find a way to help you out, then you are shopping at the wrong place.

In A Word YES,
If It was me, I would go to the cigar family website and report the tabocconist to them, if he is a Fuente recognised retailer, it could effect his status with them, The down side is, he may not be able to get fuentes products anymore.

I'm thinking, 'yeah, well?' ... if he's not SELLING any now, what changes for the customer if he can't GET any from Fuente? ... all I see changing is that greedy Gus just won't be getting any for himself either ...

I would be willing to help you acquire an Opus X - Just so happens that I got a few of em in my humi that is trying to get out...

As for the shop owner buying them all for himself, Hmmm, I think that may not be an accurate statement. I believe that he is sharing them with privledged clients. Bottom Line: I would talk with the owner directly and ask him/her about it....Who Knows!

Doesn't bother me....I can't efford them anyway. I do think he could at least split them with his customers.

In some regards, I suppose it's no different than a butcher taking home the best cuts of meat ... the only difference is that if the butcher never had a T-bone or a filet mignon on hand when you wanted one, you'd just start shopping at a different meat market ...

I'd ask the owner myself. If he doen't want to help, find another retailer

The owner should not let this out to the public, what a creep! I would not buy from him again.

Aux, no wonder you don't know what one is like! You're supporting a cigar fascist by buying ANYTHING at that shop!

A place like that would NEVER find the likes of me in it...EVER!

Sounds to me like the owner has a big time beef with the counter guy who let the cat out of the bag.

Give the Owner a chance to explain. Perhaps the counter guy has ulterior motives.

I agree with some of the posts who advise to talk to the owner about it. All you currently have is information from their employee who may or may not have correct information or be telling the truth. Give them a chance. If the answer you get is unacceptable then exercise your right to take your business elsewhere. Just don't allow yourself to jump to conclusions without all the facts.

Good point DB, you wanna here it from the horse's mouth before you pass judgement. There's a chance that dude may not know what he's talking about. It's so hard to find good help these days. But if he was right, I wouldn't shop there.

I'd have to check this one out. A retailer is in business to make money. My opinion is that if he has a sought after, salable product, he would probably do without it himself if he felt he could satisfy his customers (which are, after all, his life's blood as far as business is concerned). If he were keeping them to himself, I suspect that would be a closely guarded secret that he wouldn't share, even with his help. I believe I would confront him directly about the product and see what his response is. If he begins to talk in terms of not being able to procure them (or rarely) I would request being put on a waiting list with a stated anticipated date of arrival of the product. I would then make sure that I checked with him and continued checking if he set different dates, until he either had the product or stated he absolutely could not get it. In other words, yes it would make me angry and I would make sure that he had to really work to "keep them for himself." Just my thoughts...

Some of the Opus I've bought in some of the stores, you do have to be on a list. They call/email when they come in. They limit purchases, and they don't put them out. So it is possible that this guy works the same way.

Getting ahold of the owner might be more of a hassle than I could imagine. He's one of those high profile kinda people. He runs a couple billard clubs here in town, one of which is connected to the tobacco shop.

He does have memberships, so the only thing I can think is that he procures those XXX for his club 'members'. Still. Is one box to much to ask for singles?

I'll see about getting ahold of the owner though. What sparked me off what the nice lit Opus X sign in the shop. This coupled with the fact that its the ONLY tobacconist in town, I know he is a recognized retailer.

Wish me luck!!

smithbw, mail is on the way.. (:
