This may sound strange but I picked up five of these when my son graduated basic and planned on putting them away until he gets out. He will be in a minimum of 6 years but I would guess he might re-up.
Anyway; the cigars do not appear to be premium enough for long term storage and I want to remove the bands and put them on some sticks that will be worth the wait and will not lose their peak flavor in 10 years or more.
These bands are presently on 50 ring size.
Any suggestions??

Bud,
What’s your son do and where is he stationed? I’ve been in the Air Force 19 years now. Just curious.

As for the smokes, I’ve got no suggestions. He may even decide he likes it and stay in until retirement. You never know. I might suggest you keep them and smoke them as celebration for other milestones in his career. As he progresses through his six years he will have at least 3 or 4 promotions. He will most likely attend and graduate airman leadership school, a big event in an airman’s career. If he makes promotion to an NCO he will also attend an NCO induction ceremony, which I highly suggest you attend. It is an extremely moving ceremony steeped in longstanding military tradition. Anyway, all these events could conceivably happen within the first four years of his career and would be worthy of a celebration smoke with the USAF smokes as well as any other fine cigar you may have.

Just my thoughts.

My son is at Eglin waiting for his EOD training to start in August. He is named after my Uncle who was damn near a "Lifer" in the USAF; so who knows...
That is a good point you made Kcody. Still think I will find three to put away long term (one for his brother too). I posted my son's picture when he graduated basic from Lackland TX.

Glad you are there for all of us Kcody, as well as you other fine brothers of the leaf in the service!

These are actually pretty good Nicaraguan smokes made by Don Kiki L. I 1st got to know the line when Don Kiki got the award to produce the special smokes, bands and Souveneir boxes for West Point's 200th Anniversary last year --- I think they are a very solid cigar and an especially good bang for the buck !!!

I'd leave them as is - I've been aging a few and they get to be a VERY nice smoke.

Currently 31 years total military service as of last 01/03 (4 years active USAF and 27 years Air National Guard), and they haven't kicked me out so far (am typing on a laptop at my June UTA right now). Just won a bid on a box of the USAF cigars, but have yet to smoke one. Letting them age a while in my coolidor. Knew they were made by Don Kiki and would probably be a medium-bodied smoke (I actually like a cigar as full-bodied as I can find, but the USAF band sold me). I don't believe I would modify them at all, i.e., putting the bands on other cigars. You bought them for the reason you bought them, and to me the thought/purpose is what is important (as long as the cigar is acceptable, and I think Don Kiki is). Just my thoughts.

Addendum: Remember Lackland quite well (hot as Hell) as I was there in August, 1964). Also have logged a lot of training time at the PRIME RIBS training site, Field 4, owned, operated, and right outside of Eglin AFB, Fla.

These are a surprisingly good deal for the money. I've gone through one box and have two more in storage. I haven't been disappointed yet.
By the way, 21+ years active keeping the F-16 flying. Congrat's to your boys on a good decision.

Thanks for your responses guys. They will stay as is and be burned at proper intervals. I will still find the "special" different cigar(s) for long term.

Best wishes for you and your families - BUD
