toby and i were watching a pbs special. an irish tenor named daniel o'donnald was the star.

everything he sang was in the key of c and almost everything he sang was country. the irish songs he did sing were arranged country.

we left when he started to sing a song he wrote called
"my tears have washed i love you
from the blackboard of my heart."

Rick ... he didn't write that song ...

BLACKBOARD OF MY HEART
DLS 1-8-02
WORDS AND MUSIC BY LYLE GASTON AND HANK THOMPSON.
RECORDED BY HANK THOMPSON- 1955

_______________________________________________________

WHEN I WAS YOUNG AND WENT TO SCHOOL,
THEY TAUGHT ME HOW TO WRITE.
TO TAKE THE CHALK AND MAKE A MARK,
AND HOPE IT TURNS OUT RIGHT.

WELL, THAT'S THE WAY IT IS WITH LOVE,
AND WHAT YOU DID TO ME.
I WROTE IT SO YOU'D KNOW,
THAT I WAS YOURS ETERNALLY.
IF YOU'D BEEN TRUE THE WAY YOU SHOULD,
AND NOT HAVE GONE ASTRAY.
THESE TEARS WOULD NOT HAVE FALLEN DOWN,
AND WASHED THE WORDS AWAY.

NO NEED TO TALK, 'CAUSE IF THE CHALK,
SHOULD WRITE THOSE WORDS AGAIN,
IT WILL BE FOR SOMEONE ELSE,
NOT THINGS THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN.
BUT MY TEARS HAVE WASHED 'I LOVE YOU'
FROM THE BLACKBOARD OF MY HEART.
IT'S TOO LATE TO CLEAN THE SLATE,
AND MAKE ANOTHER START.

I'M SATISFIED THE WAY THINGS ARE,
ALTHOUGH WE'RE FAR APART.
MY TEARS HAVE WASHED 'I LOVE YOU'
FROM THE BLACKBOARD OF MY HEART.
BUT MY TEARS HAVE WASHED 'I LOVE YOU'
FROM THE BLACKBOARD OF MY HEART.
IT'S TOO LATE TO CLEAN THE SLATE,
AND MAKE ANOTHER START.

I'M SATISFIED THE WAY THINGS ARE,
ALTHOUGH WE'RE FAR APART.
MY TEARS HAVE WASHED 'I LOVE YOU'
FROM THE BLACKBOARD OF MY HEART.

are you kidding me. how on earth did you have this in your memory. i took the man at his word or i couldn't understand what he was saying because of the brogue mixed with country accent.

have you heard him sing?

Irish Country & Western?

Potential song titles:

"You broke my heart, but don't spill my beer".
"Blink your eyes if you want me to drink".
"You've paid the tab, now be my wife"
"Life is tough, let's gin and beer it"

I use to have a memory ... but I forgot where I put it ...

That is an old, old country song! Not my cup of tea (booze) but I cannot imagaine Irish country and western music being blended together!

"You take the High Road and I'll ride my horse on the low road......etc!

the best irish tenor i have ever heard and the best song he ever sang, is john gary singing danny boy. i saw him in person in vegas. first he talked about what the song was about in a way i had never understood until then. then he busted me and pretty much everyone in the audience with his interpretation.

i've been lucky enough to see an audience react like that two other times.

once when at a recital, montserrat caballe, sang "o mio bambino caro" from gianni schicchi, which i have on the computer and will be happy to send anyone by email

and once, a long time ago, before toby realized she did not have to do everything i told her to do, i made her get up on an open mike, in a rowdy country western bar, and sing danny boy. the band did not know she is a trained vocalist until she was a few notes into it and the piano backup became a band backup.

at 66 her voice is still pure gold and anytime she sings with bradley at a kareokee, when she wants to, not when i tell her to, they have a blend that breaks me up.
