Anybody know who wrote the original?

This is the David Allan Coe version of
"You Never Even Call Me By My Name":

It was all that I could do to keep from cryin'
Sometimes it seems so useless to remain
You don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
You never even call me by my name.
You don't have to call me Waylon Jennings
And you don't have to call me Charlie Pride.
You don't have to call me Merle Haggard, anymore.
Even though you're on my fightin' side.

Chorus:
And I'll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standin' in the rain.
You don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
You never even call me by my name.

I've seen my name a few times in the phone book
And I've seen it on signs in joints I've played,
But the only time I know, I'll hear David Allan Coe
Is when Jesus has his final judgment day.

Chorus:

Well, I was drunk the day my Mom got outta prison.
And I went to pick her up in the rain.
But, before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got runned over by a damned old train.

Chorus:

So I'll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standin' in the rain.
No, You don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
You never even call me, I wonder why you don't call me
Why don't you ever call me by my name.

You Never Even Call Me By My Name
(AKA The Perfect Country & Western Song)
Steve Goodman and [although he won't admit it] John Prine)

In the song he credits his friend Steve Goodman for informing him that he had not written the perfect C&W song. Thus, he modified w/ getting drunk, pick-ups, trains, etc. Thus I assume DA Cole wrote the original version or it was just a creative & catchy way to write a song.
Also the referance to hearing the name DA Cole on judgement day would lean to his writing it.

There is no such thing as a perfect C&W song.

Except the when the volume is turned down.

The ONLY thing that could be construed as perfect in a C&W song is the end!

Hee-Haw, who's wrasslin' who tonite, and what number car is gonna go around the circle faster and more times!

Steve S is correct, song was written by Steve Goodman who also wrote "City of New Orleans" among other great songs.

Anybody know who wrote the Jerry Jeff Walker classic "Up Against the Wall Red Neck Mother"?
Pop Quiz.

Just checked my CD "For the Record" by David Allen Coe and he credits Steve Goodman for writing, "You Don't Have to call Me Darling" and says that they (he and Goodman) changed the name of the song after adding the final verses. So in essence it is a co written work by both Coe and Goodman. For the record I am not a C & W fan either, just like certain artist from all genres, and David Allen Coe is one of them.
