I understand that cigars suspected of having beetles should be frozen, but does it really have NO effect on flavor if done properly? I mean, I never order fish if it's been previously frozen, and I like fresh hamburg better than frozen. Why should I not expect a cigar to likewise become less flavorful after partaking in a deep chill? Besides, I like the taste of "live" smoked larvae over that of the dead...

Freezing kills the eggs ... before they turn into larvae and beetles. If you've got beetles, it too late ...

Although I have seen people chew-the-hell out of the end of a cigar, they are not a food group. I don't think freezing will harm their flavor. Me, I just leave newly purchased cigars out of my humidor for a while (in a ziplock). If they have no signs of beetles I place them in my dor. Have not had any problems yet.

I had to freeze a Partagas Serie D (ISOM) just before New Year's Eve 2000 and it was the best cigar I've ever had (even after freezing)..Supposedly, many of the big retailers freeze their incoming shipment as a precaution before selling them to the general public, so I'm sure you (and everyone here) has enjoyed previously frozen cigars and didn't know it.

if your cigar has eggs in it, why would you go to the trouble to freeze it to kill the eggs? I mean who wants to smoke a cigar with eggs in it anyway? Surely that will cause a few nasty puffs, I don't know, I guess you don't know you have eggs in it before it is placed in the freezer.

I've noticed NO change in taste between a never-frozen and a once-frozen cigar. Just make sure you use a quality zip-lock-type bag so you don't get freezer burn on your sticks (I use Zip-Lock Freezer Bags and never had freezer burn on my sticks). Besides, you're only freezing it for 2 days, not 2 months. Make sure you go to the refrigerator for another day or two, so the cigar can thaw out without splitting.

Is freezer burn a distant cousin to rug burn? I'm trying to picture that...

Is there a way I can store my half-freezer-burned cigars so I can finish freezer burning them later?
:-)

Here in Southern California we are about to be "burned" by the utility companies and that isnt even any fun! What happened to this post anyway?

In many southern states, freezer burn is a CLOSE cousin to rug burn....

Look at it this way. Excessive heat usually kills the taste of most foods, but does wonders for our tabbacco when fermenting, so I suppose a little freezing doesn't do anything.

I like my Ribeye steak medium well. Gene & Giorgettis in Chicago broils their steak at 1200 degrees. Excessive heat does NOT ruin food. (ice cream maybe). My concern is the fact that you are changing the tobacco on a molecular level. in other words, the moisture becomes ICE. If you freeze beer or wine it too gets ruined.

Do thawed ice cubes taste different than the water you used before freezing them? I knew I should have payed attention in chemisty class! This is getting too involved for me....I need a drink and a smoke(unfrozen).
