I've been reading the posts over the past few days (since registering last week and buying some 5-packs) and I've decided that I might actually find a good solution to my problem here. My favorite local retailer sold a store brand Churchill that was, in my opinion, nearly perfect. Oily wrapper, firm draw, flavorful, slightly sweet, held the ash well, and at a good price. The question is: among the regular customers and citizens of the forum, what cigars, in your opinion, fit that description - oily wrapper, firm draw, slightly sweet, good flavor and good price? Thanks for your help.

Recommendations are tough, because they are based on an individual's personal preference and taste. However, what else have you smoked that you enjoyed? Do you like a mild bodied smoke, or a medium or full? What types of wrappers do you enjoy...maduro, natural, corojo, etc?

These questions, among many others will help narrow down the possibilities :)

i.am.steve,
What have I smoked that I liked? Hmmm...

Don Juan Churchill, Robusto
Partagas No. 10, Black Label Robusto
Hoja De Nicaragua Corona, Consul

to name a few.

To answer your other question, I like a natural wrapper best.

I neglected to mention that the store brand was a Honduran.

Welcome aboard. I know you're gonna like it here.

I don't do suggestions because I am still taste testing everything. Gotta love those 5 packs, though. If you end up not liking them, you can trade for other stuff.

Honduran you say....

For a mild bodied smoke...Helix and Astral are some good consistent ones.

For a medium bodied smoke...Monte Carlo and Astral TVS are definitely very good.

For full bodied...and since you mentioned Partagas Black...you may like Camacho Corojo and Camacho SLR

Also, you can't go wrong with a Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur 1066 Dark Knight!

Many good suggestions have been given already, and based on the examples that you gave of those you have enjoyoed, perhaps I can offer a few others to try as well. All of these are priced very reasonably on C-bid:

La Hoja
Indian Tabac Anniversary series
Don Juan Criollo (I assume it was the regular Don Juan line that you had--I really like the criollo line)
Perdomo fresh-rolled wheels
Sherpa
Cu-Avana (fairly mild but very well made)
Adolphus
Pirate's Gold
Torano Nicarauguan box-pressed
Cupido Criollo (already mentioned, but it's worth mentioning twice)
Santa Damiana 2000

For a bit more money, I'd recommend:
Torano Signature or Silver series
Avo
Gurkha
bucaneros (just giving them a second vote)
Hoyo Presnado Oscuro
Don Tomas Cameroon
Oliva "O"
Perdomo Cabinet series

"OO"

for my money you can't go wrong with Padron. Natural or Maduro, either one sure dose satisfy.

Stay away from the Nicaraguans, they all suck, especially the Padrons.

Welcome aboard. Think you'll really enjoy it here. Great bunch of guys and accumulated knowledge and experience can help save you(as it did me)a lot of bad decisions. Basically your question is impossible to answer due to the subjectivity of "taste." You've been given some examples that would fit what you are looking for, for some of us and not others. What I have done is purchase 5 packs and just sampled. You don't have to invest a lot of money in a full box until you find what fits your description. Also tastes can change depending on time of day, mood you're in, what you're doing, etc. So just explore and enjoy and share your reviews/assessments of various cigars with the rest of us.

Now now BMW. There's enough to go around if we don't hog them all to ourselves ( I'd never do that myself, heh, heh)
