I'll be going to Mexico if a few months and will probably be picking up some Cubans. I have smoke some RyJ before and like them. I usually smoke the CAO Braziias or Don Tomas Corojo Toros. I know these aren't the top of the line, like PAMS or Opus X, which I have never had, but as far as Cubans go, which one should I get. Which ones are going to be along the line as Brazilias or DT's or If you think I would like PAM's or Opus x which ones would be close to those ?? Thanks,

Word to the wise ...

... if you don't buy them at a 'La Casa Del Habano' I can confidently guarantee you that they are going to be fake.

Sadly to say in, most parts of Mexico, the amount of counterfeit Cuban cigars is out of control. You will find that everyone is selling Cuban cigars these days, including liquor stores, curios shops that also sell other counterfeit merchandise, and even carts in the street that display the Habanos logo. Not only are these shops selling counterfeit Habano cigars but the conditions in which they store there cigars can guarantee you of a bad experience. In Mexico an authorized Habanos dealer has to display the Habanos certificate signed by the president of Habanos to assure it's customers what they are purchasing is 100% authentic.

BTW --- comparing Cuban cigars to those grown in the other countries, is like comparing apples to oranges ...

... it very difficult to make comparisons.

There is another recent thread here on Cuban cigars, so you might want to check that one out also ...

buy a cuban cigar in mexico? i wouldn't even drink their water, or sit on a toilet.

the only hotel i might consider is the acapulco princess, they claim to filter their water, have their own wells, etc. i've been to mexico on many occassions, toby and i were cruisered for almost 10 years. i have been in the kitchens of some of the better hotels in acapulca, and i have seen what the salads look like before they fan away the flies as they serve you.

drink a lot of pepto bismal

botelerc, where are you going to in Mexico? I've spent a TON of time in Cancun and can direct you to some different cigar shops. There are definitely some DOs and DONTs when looking for ISOMs in a tourist area.

While I definitely agree with Slim that La Casa is your most reliable store, I was there last month and the selection didnt look that great. The appearance of the cigars were the worst I've ever seen. I would have been embarrased to sell them if I was the owner of the store.

If I can help out in any way, shoot me an e-mail at:

I was in Cancun about 6 months ago on a long weekend vacation and I would have to agree with Puskarich and Slim that you have to be VERY careful when buying. I believe that even the Habanos authorized dealers had a few less than authentic cigars (the bands would look off from the ones next to them). Also, I would be willing to bet that the cigars are kept in less than optimal conditions as well. I ended up buying 3 Cohiba Lanceros and one was so dry that it actually crumbled (the other 2 while smokeable were awfully dry).
