I consider it free entertainment when they call me. My goal is typically to keep them on the phone as long as possible.
For instance, I let them go through their whole spiel. Then I ask questions about their product or service. I'm very particular about the details. Then I ask them to go through their pitch again to make sure I understand it.
Periodically during all of this, I'll fain an interruption, "can you hang on? There's someone at my door?" then I'll set the phone down, pick it back up 2 or 3 minutes later, are you there? I'm sorry. And we'll go on, and I'll say, can you hang on? I have something boiling over on the stove, set the phone down, come back. Ask them more details about their product. My goal is to have them BEGGING to call me back later or to get off the phone because it seems that I'm not a good candidate. NO! NO! I want to hear more!! Hang on, I'm ready to buy!! Let me get my credit card!! set the phone down... Come back, oh damn! I can't find it! Oh wait, let me look in the car. Set the phone down... Come back GOT IT!! oh damn.. It's expired... :-)
