What bourbon or whiskey goes well with a cigar?

All,

I've read some posts and articles stating how good cigars go with bourbon or whiskey, but I am a novice when it comes to bourbon or whiskey. I've been wondering what brands go well with a hearty cigar. I love my cigars and am looking for a way to enhance my pleasure of them.

So, come all you bourbon and whiskey drinkers out there. Give me your humble opinions.

Thanks,
Matt

For me, it has to be Makers Mark although Johnny Walker Black will do in a pinch

My fav is Blantons...

But it depends on the mood. Blantons is extremely smooth but If I want a little kick in the backside its Bookers. They both run about $50.00 a bottle here in CA.

For less $$$, you can't go wrong with Knob Creek or Makers Mark either.

I'm partial to Knob Creek. I prefer Beam when hitting the mass produced whiskeys. The single malts from across the pond are also outstanding with a good smoke. I have a bottle of Glenlivet 18 yr that pairs beautifully.

It was recomended to try the Glendranoch 15 year Sherry some time ago. I tried it and it is superb. This is by far the best bang for the buck I have tried for Scotch. MK

DMV, I hear ya but then we all know that there is nothing new under the sun. Besides, here's a cut and paste from Rookie in response to Charlie (two of our esteemed Cbid vets) from one of the threads you list dating back to 2001:

"This is a Topic (Favorite Drink to go with a cigar) that has been posted probably three times in the last three months, but every time it's reintroduced, it receives a similar number of people responding... Obviously our tastes change and new drinks are added along with new members posting... It's a very popular post that I always enjoy reading over and over personally."

I have fallen in love with Glenmorangie 12 Yr. Portwood finished Scotch. I am a huge fan of both scotch and port and this superb whisky has a essence of port on the finish that magically combines with every cigar I have ever had it with - I especially enjoy it with a Perdomo 2.

In fact, now that I am thinking about it I am going to go get a glass (neat of course) and head outside for a relaxing evening with a P2 equacion.

Ditto beansell!! You beat me to the Dimple Pinch!! Scotch, definitely Scotch. Although I would never dabble with one so young... They need to be at least 18 for me and preferably 21 ;-)

I like, Glen Morangie, Glen Livit (sp) or The Balvinie port wood. Served neat with a splash of water to release the bouquet...

George Dickle. Neat. No mixer. No ice. Goes absolutely great with a full-bodied cigar. Am enjoying about three fingers in a whiskey glass right now with an Olivia "O" after getting away from a Hellish day at work (Mondays usually are!).

New here...Hello all!

I've just recently tried Bushmill's (Irish whiskey). Pretty stiff drink, but not bad w/a stoge.

My fav? Remy Martin Congac...until I can afford the pricier stuff, heh.

Robby - I would normally agree that 12 years is quite young and rough around the edges for most scotch, but I bet you would be pleasantly suprised with the Glenmorangie 12yr. PWF I mentioned - it has little bite, but definately tastes like it has been aged 5 or more years longer than the bottle date.

Also, I would like to second Originalgoat's Lagavulin 16yr. suggestion - they don't get much better than this IMHO.

Another scotch I have recently tried that has a lot going for it is Highland Park 12yr. There is no way this is only 12 years...has not only awsome finish, but is smoother than most 18+ yr old scotches I have tried.

Agree Bushmill's is a fine drink with most any cigar. Ever tried the Bushmill's Black. Even smoother. Goes down so easily I always want to be settled for the evening with my 'gars in easy reach with this stuff...

I agree with the fellows that prefer a single malt scotch. But like cigars You have to try a few to find the ones that suit Your taste. Ruffled Grouse blended single malt is good and You won't go wrong with Glenfiddich in My opinion.

Can't handle scotch although I would love to. Great selection. Unfortunately, got too drunk on it (Cutty Sark...I know...I know...cheap scotch, but I was a two-striper in the USAF...what else could I afford?) one time and ate salama with it. Worst hangover I've ever had and still remember it. Love the smokey taste though....

How do you drink your scotch, bourbon, etc. with your cigar?

Being a college student, the only way I know how to drink liquor is shots , lol.

And since I don't think a shot of the hard stuff would be very good or last through the whole cigar, exactly how do you drink it?

Take a highball glass and pour 3-4 fingers high. Some add ice, some add water, and some even add ice and water. You're not drinking this to get plowed, think of it as "cleansing the pallette". Enjoy the drink and enjoy the cigar, if you're doin' it right...they'll finish at about the same time!

I personally like my scotch neat (or if it is young and has a lot of bite I add a couple teaspoons of water). I keep a glass of club soda on the side to refresh my palate from time to time.

Neat in a snifter. You can exhale some smoke into the glass and inhale it again.

And yes Robby. I'd never heard of a blended single malt until last Fall. At the Celtic Festival in Bethlehem Ruffled Grouse had a booth. The free samples were excellent until they cut Me off!

Old Charter propietors reserve 13 yr bourbon, Weller 12yr Bourbon, Eagle Rare 10yr, Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit, Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Rip Van Winkle 15 yr,Wild Turkey 12yr...Scotch: Glendronach 15yr Sherry Wood, Mcallan 18yr(too expensive though at 90 beans plus the Glendronach Rocks).

The Bourbons above are some of the best whiskey around and all are 40 bucks and under...the Eagle Rare is 20 bucks and the weller 12yr is around 23 bucks...two outstanding deals.

Burbon not my thing. But a couple a few fingers of Talisker, or Oban, forget the rocks, they just get in the way. When I run out of that I go with martinis Lukosawua(sp?) polish vodka made in the same factory as Copin but 1/2 the price, triple distiled potato yum. J
