The Dollar?

Three salesmen decided to share a $30 hotel room for one night
and split the cost evenly.

After they checked in, the hotel manager noticed that they
should have been charged only $25 for the room.

So, he gave the porter five one-dollar bills and said to return
the money to the three men.

As the porter was walking to the salesmen's room, he wondered
how he was going to split the five dollars evenly between the
three salesmen. So, he put two dollars in his pocket and gave
each of the three salesmen one dollar.

Now, if each of the salesmen paid $10 for their share of the
room and were given one dollar back, then they each would have
paid $9 for the room.

Nine times three is twenty-seven, plus the two dollars the
porter put in his own pocket is twenty-nine
(9 x 3 = 27. 27 + 2 = $29)

Where is the other dollar?

Think about it.

You forgot that shipping on the first 5-pack is $3.95 and then $.50 for the remaining 5-packs. Unless you have a temporary fit of insanity and buy 30 packs of mints. Then all heck breaks loose. :-)

Oh, wrong post.......

The math is wrong. If the room is only $25, then it is not $10/person. It is only $8.33, plus they got a dollar back from the porter. So, the math should be:

30-5 = 25 / 3 = (8.3333 + .6667) * 3 + 3 = 30

Am I right??? What do I win????

Yes wrong math. You are counting the $2.00 in the porter's pocket twice.

The $27.00 is $25.00 for the room and the $2.00 in the porter's pocket. You can't add the $2.00 porter again. Do you work for Enron or Aurther Anderson?

Crazy math or Apples and Organges. The $27 or the $9 each includes the $2 in the Porters pocket and the $25 for the Hotel, the other $3 is in the Salesmen's pockets.

The IRS busts the schmuck for running a business and pocketing the money and not reporting the taxes. He is forced into degrading himself and has to go out on the road and work as Willie Nelson's busdriver to repay the govt.

Gotta love that "new" math!

This is wrong - You can't ADD the $2 to 27. You need to subtract it to get back to the $25. Then it makes sense.

30-3 = 27
27-2 = 25
3+2 = 5
5+25 = 30

Every dollar is accounted for. The salesmen overpaid by $0.67 each.
