Had to put down my Best Friend today

Today has been the saddest day of the year for me and my wife. We had to put down our best friend, Duke. We got him shortly after we moved into our house and immediately fell in love with him. He was a Great Dane/Boxer mix and had the best qualities of both breeds. I never had to worry about being away from home as he would have protected my wife with his life. He was a timid giant around everyone, but had a fence aggresssion. As soon as he got near a fence he would bark his fool head off. And up to two and a half weeks ago that ws it, but he ended up nipping a neighbor. I ended having to go to court, got fined, and was told that if he ever did that again I would go to jail. With me being unemployed we couldn't afford a privacy fence, no rescue agancy would accept him after he bit someone, couldn't find someone in the country to take him, so after the mandatory quarantine period we had to put him down today.

That broke both of our heats seeing him there in the cage, looking at us like we abandoned him, with a sad sad look on his face. That really killed both of us! I feel like a failure and a coward for not being able to do something about this. But, that is the way life goes sometimes. He should be euthanized by now. I just hope they did it fast so he wasn't too scared of his surroundings. He was very fond of the cage we had to put him in at the SPCA. He was actually crying when we left. Talk about breaking your heart, that sure did it!

Anyway, I am just rambling and had to get this off my chest.

Matt - Let me say how deeply saddened I am by your story. I couldn't even imagine being in your situation and being strong enough to do what you did. Tonight, I wil have my last Monte #2 in Dukes honor and yours.

Our dogs are our children right now... and I couldn't imagine having to do something like that. Our sympathy is certainly with you, and tonight, I believe I'll break out an Ashton VSG in Duke's honor...

hoagie55 - I'm feeling your pain. I went through a similar experience with my Great Dane Zeus not too long ago. In a perfect world, those 2 would be playing together right now, having a great time.

I'll be lighting one up for Duke tonight......

All the best,
John

Some people don't understand why putting a pet to sleep is such a big deal. I think those people never had to go through the experience. Those of us that have know what you are going through. Sorry to hear about your loss.

I totally understand Hoagie...sat with our Beagle of 12 years in my lap wrapped in her favorite old blanket as the doc stuck in the needle...within seconds..the last gasp. Pets truly are family members and Duke will play with you again some day. A glass of port and a Buc Full Sail is in order.

Thanks guys! I will truly miss him more than most can imagine. He has been my buddy for the past 2 1/2 years and has helped see me through some real tough times. I will miss him the most tomorrow morning. I get up and have a cup of coffee while he's sitting with his head on my lap watching the morning news.

He will be missed and always in my heart!

rest easy. i have outlived 4 poodles and had to euthanize all of them. they get a small shot in a vien in the leg and are gone in less then 30 seconds. they go to sleep gently with no pain and the doctor usually has his hand on the dog for comfort.

Matt, you are not rambling. losing a member of the family is always difficult. you are far from a coward or a failure, you did what had to be done and i will mourn your loss too. Being a dog lover myself, i truly feel your pain. an 858sg will burn in honor and rememberance of Duke tonight.

What Rickmaven said. I worked for a vet for two years while in college. The pet goes down quickly and without pain. They just go to sleep. Almost instantly. Here's to Duke!
