Hi all,

I was wondering if you all might be able to help me out. I have a friend who is computer savvy and has recently lost his job. He has degrees in a few things and has even taught collage classes on computers. He is in the Goldsborough(SP) NC area. He can be a network admin or almost anthing computer related. His family is about to be in a hurting condition. And his headhunter hasn't found anything for him yet. If any of you know of a technical position where you work or might have a friend, Please let me know. Sorry to be so vague. I'm in the process of trying to get his resume. Thanks,

Allen

PS: He used to work for a company that printed secure documents like official checks and such. It was called Banknote...

Has he tried any of the banks down there? Sounds like he has banking experience. The Carolinas are flooded with banks. He may want to try BB&T. I used to work for them years ago. They keep expanding and buying other banks all the time. Cant hurt to try. I think their IT dept is headquartered in Raleigh. They have sizeable operations in Winston Salem and other areas. Have him look at http://www.bbandt.com

put an ad in the paper. HOME COMPUTER REPAIR, I CAN GET YOUR COMPUTER UP AND RUNNING AGAIN AND TEACH YOU A FEW THINGS THAT WILL HELP YOU. charge $100.00 an hour or maybe a litle less. once you build a client base, it will grow on it's own with a little help from you.
perhaps add "I SPECIALIZE IN PERSONAL HELP FOR THE AVERAGE USER."

your not employed anyway, give it a few weeks and see what happens. an add can't cost that much.

toby and i started when i was 40, 2 kids, house, car and all the rest of the payments. give it a shot.

I live in the Goldsboro, NC area. Not a huge job market- I commute to RTP to work everyday (62 miles each way). The computer/ IT field is overloaded in this area with many tech companies having laid off lots of people in the last few years. Has he had any luck with the community colleges or the military bases in the area?

ajeroth --- I hope his luck has been better than mine, and I have my fingers crossed from him ...

I've been out of work since the middle of last October, when the company I worked for went 'belly-up' ... and I couldn't begin to tell you how many applications and resumes I have floating around out there.

And before last week ... only ONE replied back to to me, to tell me that they would keep it on file for 6 months. The rest ... nothing. Not even a thank you ...

But ... last Tuesday at 7 pm, I received a call from one company (and out of all my applications, this one was my 'dream job') ... and they wanted to give me a telephone interview on the spot. I have never had a telephone interview before, but it was cool ... because I could smoke a cigar during the conversation.

The guy that called said that there were so many folks that applied, this was the best way to weed them out, before giving personal interviews.

He said that if they liked what I said, they would call me back to come in for a personal interview. Well, Friday they called me back and said that they would like to see me on Monday (today) ... and I just got back from my personal interview a couple of hours ago.

It was with the owner of the company, and some other guy ... not sure what his position is, HR or a Manager of some sort.

Anyway, the interview lasted for over an hour ... and they said that there are quite a few applicants, but wouldn't say how many ... I asked if it was over 100, and he just looked ant me, raised his eyebrow, and smiled at me ... YIKES!

I came prepared though, with four folders of documentation of what I did at my last job ... and I think that impressed them a little. Actually ... they were shocked, as I proceeded to go into detail on what I was capable of doing for them. Now days ... you have to have an edge, something that makes you stand out from the rest of the herd.

As I was leaving, the President of the company came up to me and said, "right now, you're looking real good ... and I can see by the documentation you brought in, you proven beyond words that you are capable of doing what we require done in the position we are seeking to fulfill. Here, let me give you my business card". But, he also said, that there were many more candidates that they wanted to interview.

Man ... I've got my fingers crossed ... and I won't know if I am chosen until the beginning of September, because that is when they want the position to be filled ... and they said it would take that long to finish up all the interviews.

YIKES again ...

Yesterday, I returned home from running some errands, in order to get ready for the trip we are taking to Playa Del Carmen (across for the Isle of Cozumel, and 40 miles south of Cancun) in the Yucatan Peninsula on
the Mexican Carribean. The wife and I are leaving Saturday morning, for a seven night stay at the 'Gold Crown' (5-Star) Resort Condominiums at Fisherman's Village in Playacar ...

When I walked in the door ... the light was flashing on my answering machine. It was one of the two guys that interviewed me, asking me if I could come in tomorrow (which is now today) ... for a 'THIRD' interview (1st one was on the phone, 2nd one was in person last Monday) ...

... and that the said the President of the company wanted to meet me!

As it turns out, one of the guys that intervied me on Monday (that I thought was the President), was the CFO and Vice President (but also an owner of the comany). The company, I found out, is owned by two brothers ... so today, I've been asked to meet with his brother, who is the President ... and interview with him.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed ... but I'm still not out of the woods yet. There are a LOT of candidates going for this position ...

It would be the 'icing on the cake', if after 10 months of being 'jobless' ... that I had one waiting for me when I returned home from our wonderful vacation ... ;^)

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you as well Slim.

Good thing you kept your resources intact to survive a 10 month search. That is a valid lesson for all of us.

Make sure you have something set aside for a rainy day....or year. So you can maintain near your standard of living should your income cease.

Either that, or marry well.
