Hi! I'm new here to cbid and to cigars in general. So I was wondering- If you guys had one piece of advice to give to a person just getting into cigars, what would it be? I'm glad to be here and hope to eventually know some you and to one day contribute my two cents.

Welcome to the nut house Owen! (My wife wants to name our first born Owen but I keep thinking of "Throw Momma From the Train :) Anywho, The most important piece of advice I can give you is...use the search feature! Almost all of your questions can be answered with that. Happy bidding and send Low and Robby some matches - LOL

Welcome on Board Owen ---

Experiment around the cigar offerings of the various producers to zero in on "YOUR" likes and dislikes before going in for a full-box.

C-Bid has a lot to offer in 5-Pack samplers where you give each cigar a fair chance to make your :GOOD" list - but you get to spread the cigar purchase $$$$s around a bit while you are in the early stages of your cigar enjoyment experience.

Welcome Sweaty. The best advice I can give you,is not to buy boxes of cigars at the begining. Buy samplers,5packs or singles, until you develop your taste. Taste as you will see,is going to constantly change. A cigar you thought was the cats meow, next year you wouldn't touch with a 10ft pole. Also get the biggest humidor you can afford. You will need it. X

Well, welcome! In addition to the excellent advice already given, I would say, check CI (Cigars International.com) for a cost basis whenever bidding or evaluating price on cigars, invest in a coolerdor, get on the trades board and experience the wonderful fellowship and generosity of the many excellent brothers who will also help broaden your horizons, and if you dare to venture into the misc. board, by all means don't take anything too seriously!!!

Glad to have you!

Oh, and to save you some time - Bucaneros are made by a small private company, aren't available in many stores ,and the are the best cigars in the world. Arrgg!

Welcome Owen!

I have to agree with what everyone else has told you especially Penguin. Use the search engine and avoid the Slim-slap. Buy some 5 packs and hit the trade boards to further widen your selection.

If a price is too good to be true...it probaly is....DONT load up on cheepies....but the best you can at the best price you can the cheapest can turn out to be the most expensive if you dont like em and dont want to give them to friends.....moreover we are not required to have always followed our own advice...that said welcome and enjoy the trip..

Before you buy anything, ask for advice. For the first year, do not buy more cigars per week than you will smoke. It is very easy to accumulate hundreds of cigars you'll never smoke. Never, ever carry over a balance on your credit card for cigars. I've known too many people who ended their first year as a cigar smoker with a heavy debt carryover for cigars they don't like.
Read Smoke Magazine both print and on-line, Cigar Aficianado, print and on-line, Smokeshop on-line, European Cigar cult journal..and others.
If you buy cigars because you enjoy buying; not smoking cigars...Take up a new hobby.

Buy a few of the popular brands(reads the boards and you find out what people like) to trade. My recommendation is buy a couple 5 packs of high quality smokes and then trade a few of them. I like to try cigars that others like, and open myself up to cigars I would never think of buying. The brothers on these boards will take care of you. Welcome aboard!

If I had one thing to say to a beginner...it would be...

ISOM stands for "Island South of Miami," which means Cuba.

There...so don't ask again, lol.

Again, 5-packs. Do a search like "favorites" and the like and start a' biddin'!

There's nothing better than always having a new cigar to try. You must, however reserve judgement until you've sampled at least 2 of each (unless you're talking about La Estrellas, I couldn't get past an inch of one of those. Want some?).

1) I would suggest you start out with the milder cigars, then move up to medium-bodied. After awhile, you can tackle some of the fuller-bodied smokes. Do a search on "mild" to get so old threads with advice on mild brands to try.
2) Don't blow so much $$ here that it ruins your marriage. If you do, be sure the divorce settlement specifies that you get the coolidors and all there contents. :)

Try a Nat Sherman, Hamilton or Harrington, kinda sweet wrapper, and easy on the pallett for a first time cigar. Remember, everything in moderation, I usually have one cigar on the patio after work followed by a 5th of Vodlka (I figure it's made from potatoes, so I'm getting my daily dose of vegges) Welcome aboard..
