Hello everyone one, I am another newbie with a dumb question. I am expecting the arrival of my 1st humidor later today. Since I am new at this, should I leave the wrappers on or take them off when I put them in the humidor and should I not mix different types of cigars together?

The only person who can answer this is Slimboli or Al'Thor :)

Do a search and there are numerous threads about this topic but I will give you what limited knowledge I have to offer.

1) Wrappers on or off? Doesn't matter as far as the cigar is concerned. I leave all mine on except for ISOM's which aren't in cello anyway. I even store whole boxes unopened in my 3 cooleradors.

2) To mix or not to mix? Don't mix any flavored or aromatic cigars with your standard stock cigars. Over time (sometimes very short) the aroma of the aromatic/flavoreds will begin to permiate (pollute) your other stock.

3) When you get your humidor in:
a) Get a new sponge and soak it in distilled water. Wipe the entire humidor down with this (wet but not dripping). Allow this to dry for a day or so.
b) Make sure to charge your humidified with a solution of 50% distilled water and 50% Propylene Glycol. This solution will keep your humidity in the humidor at a steady 70%. As the humidifier loses moisture, you can replenish it with distilled water for about 3 - 4 months without having to add more Propylene Glycol. Just watch your humidity gauge and when it starts creeping above 70%, add some more 50/50 solution. (P. S. you can buy Propylene Glycol at your local pharmacy and mix it with distilled water yourself and save a bundle over what you pay for this mixture at retail).

Humidity is a personal issue. I prefer mine at 65% so I use a little more PG in my solutions to keep humidity lower. The cigar is a little less wet and lights more easily.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your new humidor.

Thanks for the info Grond...I didn't realize I would need to wipe it down and let it sit for a day, I had planned on ripping the package open and sticking my cigars in it as soon as I got it so I could watch them grow.

Hmmmmmmmmm I was going to be a smart A$$$ with an answer but I stopped and thought better of it..Dear Sir you can run a search on Cello and come up with many different answers but it all comes down to what your personal preferance is. Some do and Some Don't. Persoanlly I don't and the reason for that is I have found that if you take the cello off then you must make sure the RH is near perfeect at all times other wise the Gar's will dry out and the wrappers will start coming apart and when smoked they burn faster and lack the taste they are intended to have (Unless they are Dog Rockets then Taste makes NO difference)Hahahah..They don't seem to ship as well (If you do any trading) unless you keep watch on them all the time. Where if you leave the Cello on them then it helps to retain the RH on the Gar alittle better and longer than with out and the shipping is easier and if you do let them dry all out then at least all the tobacco is in one close easy to handle area so you load a pipe with what is in the Cello....Botttom Line is there is No right or wrong way as of yet just how ever you want to do it,, Suggestion- try some both ways and see which you like best after all your the one that is going to do the Smoking....*S* TinMan

Welcome, crose.

The age-old question. Either way is acceptable. If you are to ever transport them, leave the cellos on, etc., blah blah blah. Do a search if you like, but it's not that important.

What IS important is that you "season" that humi first. Take a CLEAN sponge and wipe down all the wood with distilled water. It's generally best to let it sit for a few days and do it again and let it sit for a few days more before loading it up. An accurate hygrometer would be nice to see when you're between 65 and 70%, but if your cigars are still in their cellos, they won't lose or gain humidity very quickly (another reason to leave them on) so if it's close you can go ahead and drop 'em in. If you don't season, though the humidor will quickly suck the life out of your sticks.

REMEMBER, better too wet than dry. Once they're dry, you lose prescious oils and they NEVER come back.

Also, if you don't already have it, use 50/50 (PG/H20) solution in your credo. After that, accuracy is not as important, you'll only need your hygrometer as an indicator to falling H20 levels. Then recharge only with H20 for about a year (PG is very slow to evaporate), otherwise your credo will eventually fill with PG and ther'll be no more room for water.

Do a search on PG 50/50 etc. etc. Don't forget to search All Messages not just last week.

Best o' luck.

crose,

Unless you're in Arizona, your cello-on stoges will keep in the box for a day. If you're dying to smoke one, open 'em up. If not, wait.

Be patient, Grasshopper. You must be a good father to your new babies.
