SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) -- Actor Larry Hovis, best known for his role as Sgt. Carter on the 1960s television series "Hogan's Heroes" has died after a bout with cancer. He was 67.

Hovis, who taught acting at Texas State University-San Marcos, died Tuesday, the school's public relations office said.

Born on a Yakima Indian reservation in Washington on February 20, 1936, Hovis started a show business career with a musical act with his sister when he was 5 years old. His career included work as a drummer, singer, standup comedian, writer, producer of game shows and stage actor.

In 1964 he landed 10 episodes in "Gomer Pyle, USMC" as Pvt. Larry Gotschalk. His big break was "Hogan's Heroes," in which he played one of a group of allied soldiers in a German prisoner-of-war camp during World War II.

Hovis also was a co-creator and performer on "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In," university officials said.

He was hired to teach at Texas State in 1990.

Hovis is survived by four children. His wife Ann died in 1992.

A memorial service was scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, in the Theatre Center at Texas State.
